Aquarium foam Spong filter material instead of Fluval?

I'm experimenting with different ways to fill my carts and I'd like to try something like the Fluval cart filler but all I could get at a pet shop today was something called Juwel Aquarium Filter System which is 2 thick blue foam fish filters. It's similar to a thick cleaning sponge. One is quite dense (Filter Sponge Fine) while the other one (Filter Sponge Coarse) has a lot of sponge/cheesy holes in it and is a lot more springy. Both of them are about 5inches thick so very different to a lot of the you-tube vids I've seen people doing using blue filler. No problem to cut though I'd imagine.

Will this stuff be ok to try like the Fluval cart filling method?
I have it sitting in the sink in clean water just now to give it a good clean out overnight.
