Hey all. As a new member I wanted to start a topic that might pertain to a lot of members, new and old. I apologize if this doesn't apply to this forum.

As someone who's health seemed to peak in high school (26 now), I've been getting tired of feeling like death 5 minutes into pickup games of soccer and basketball. I played soccer throughout high school and played pickup games regularly afterward, until I started smoking cigarettes at 19. I still try to get out there and play, but I can't keep up anymore. Everyone I play against might as well be Pelé. After switching to vaping, I'm looking forward to getting back out there and not feeling like my lungs are going to cave.

I see plenty of anecdotal evidence of lung capacity greatly improving after a while of vaping, but I'd love to hear success stories from forum members that have made sports or other exercise/physical activity a priority again after being smoke-free.

Vaping does help return lung capacity and since you're young you should be pretty easy to rebound. The best thing you can do is get into a long, sustained aerobic/anaerobic exercise cycles like distance running or cycling interspersed with sprint training. That'll get you back running the pitch in no time, or at least it did for me.

Smoking is bad, obviously, but that's only part of the equation. Fact is, you're getting old. For many people, mid to late 20s is when hgh levels drop off so that your body does not maintain itself the way it used to. Hence you need to start training/playing regularly--i.e. running to stand still. Weekend warrior style doesn't cut it.

Another tip is to lift at least a couple times/week--especially squat and deadlift. Those full body lifts panic the system and release HGH and other hormones that can really help you stay in shape.

Trust me, I'm 40 and I still play basketball with Division I athletes. The combination of strength training and getting out 5 days/wk, even if it's just for a game or two, keeps me competitive. Now it's just a question of when are my joints going to break down?

I'm 45 years old. I spent 30 years smoking a pack a day of Camel 99s.

After vaping for a few months I took my family on vacation in the mountains. 10 mile hike, 90% over 9,000 feet in altitude, probably 50% over 10,000 feet in altitude, carrying snacks and drinks for 3 people, camera bag, and a tripod.

I felt great. Even my 12 year old daughter was having trouble keeping up with me. And got to see things that I doubt I ever would have seen if I still smoked.

And this 45 year old man can still get out there and have fun like a kid again...

(That's me with the GoPro on my head.)

For my 50th birthday I'm now planning on rafting the Grand Canyon.

I saw your rafting picture before on here, really cool. Those others are really great pictures as well. Definitely inspiring. :)

I've started lifting weights a couple months ago, and I can tell you I never would have been able to keep up with the progress I'm making while smoking. I do vape between sets sometimes and it doesn't seem to affect my performance. But also, I'm only vaping at 8mg nic, and drinking a lot of water as well...

Thanks for these replies! Some great advice and stories so far. My employer has a "cardio challenge" coming up with prizes and a raffle, so I think that's going to be a great motivator as well. They reimburse for gym costs, so there's really no reason not to get back on the weights and cycling when weather permits.

Completely Average, those photos are amazing, thanks for sharing!
