Hi all, I'm looking at getting myself a new mech mod and while looking around I see these two options (spring or magnet). I already have a Caravella with the spring switch and like it just fine.
I'm just wondering what the difference is as far as safety or is it just an option as far as just preference? Any input would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

the stingray switch is made with disc magnets;
cant just stick in a spring instead..... unless it's some sort of non conducting spring.

the nemesis comes with spring but you can get ring magnets for it; the ring magnets have to be thin, so turns out they are fragile and easily shattered if the mod drops.

Poldiac comes with disc magnets; if I recall correctly from when I opened it up, I'm pretty sure the magnets can be replaced by the right sized spring.

When I used to use mechs I preferred springs actually. Specifically very soft springs, I really liked the "effortless" button press. Some of the magnet switches I've used had a more precise switch, where if you did something like hit it from a certain angle or right on the edge of the switch, the device wouldn't fire.

My old Magneto used to do that from time to time and sometimes I'd think it was a misfire and get worried, but then realize it's just cause I didn't hit the switch for realsies.

Really? I've got an Old Skool V1 (spider button) and it's never done that to me.

My only 2 experiences with mods with magnets have not been very good.

First one was a JM and it had a "hot button" problem. Took it apart and it came with the disc magnet broken and no replacement but it did come with a spring. Before it cracked it was okay, but for me a bit stiff and required more pressure. Again, maybe it was mine.

Second one I got with magnets were the MCR mechs. Did not like the magnets either , kinda stiff?

Im a springy person I guess. Some people like magnets but I have heard that magnets tend to get oxidized much faster than even brass springs. If you get an option why not get both magnets and springs to see how you like it.

Yeah I had a friend who could replicate the issue on his Magneto too. It was like if you pressed the button from the side you could get it to sort of diagonally press down. Wouldn't actually make contact to fire the mod, since the actual firing pin was a smaller screw housed in the center of the button.

The problem was easily rectified by hitting the button more in the center. It wasn't a crazy issue, but it wasn't something I experienced with spring button mods.

Huh! I believe, but it's the opposite of my experience. It was that mod that taught me I like magnets better :)

Springy springy spring...
Like others said, it's pretty much personal preference. I personally like springs a little better, because sometimes when I change my battery, I put the magnet on upside down and have to redo it. And sometimes it's a pain in the you know what to get the bottom magnet (switch/thing you press) in the bottom of the tube.

I only have 2 Mech Mods. One is a Caravella Clone with a Spring. The Other is a Wind Rose Clone with Magnet. I like them Both. And after a Little Polishing and Fine Tuning, both Switches are Very Smooth.

If I had to choose between the two, I would go with the Magnetic Switch on the Wind Rose over the Spring Switch on the Caravella. But it Isn't by Much.

I'm actually having the exact opposite problem with my Magneto lately. I have to hit it from the side to get it to fire for some reason, and it gets a hot button pretty often. I've actually quit using it because I can't sort it out. Everything is clean and assembled properly, but it just doesn't seem to make good contact anymore. I got a year and a half of heavy use out of a $20 mod though, so I'm not mad at it. I just miss it sometimes.

Is it the V1 or the V2? I heard some sketchy things about the V2, but the V1 was super solid (at least for me).

If you get a cheapo mod get a spring. I had a cheapo mod and the magnets are cheap and mine broke and mod locked on. Ordered some magnets from FastTech and they broke installing them. So I looked around and found some in the US and paid $24 with shipping for the two magnets and they are very strong and can not be broke. The problem lies that the new magnets cost more than I paid for the mod new. CHEERS!
