Necro bro, as long as u oxidise the mesh properly (the whole thing!) it shouldn't short as it should be non-conductive already.
But then comes a problem. Becuz oxidising will turn the mesh more rigid, it will be somewhat difficult to bend it at the ceramic cup area.
I havent try it yet but i guess you could bend the mesh to fit into the cup etc first then oxidise to 'fix' the shape.
i would picture the mesh to be slightly curved like a dome at the top of the ceramic cup instead of 90degree bend like wick.
Have fun trying and let us know the result xDD

Mr Krinkle's method with mesh will work, but you've got to make sure there are no gaps between the ceramic when you place your mesh on it, it has to be thick enough to act as a dam.

Another method is to use wick together with mesh, where you cut the wick the same length as your mesh then have them place so that the wick is below the mesh.

Only tried a hybrid.
Works ok. Coil lasts much longer as you can dry-burn and continue to reuse. I just did a wash n dry-burn. Still working good though I do notice a hint of burnt taste once in awhile.

i am very new to this, if i use mesh with wick underneath it do i wrap coils around both or just the mesh. also i anything running down the side with the NR wire. If not how do you prevent shorts? Also will this work with a penelope? Thanks for the help

Yes it works on the Penelope.
Wrap coils on mesh.
If you're using a hybrid wicking, naturally your wick is down the channels. Even if there is no wick, there wouldn't be shorts if you do it proper.
