I have been researching the use of SS mesh for coils and see that most of it being sold is #400 which I understand. It also seems that it is either 316L low carbon or 316T for heat resistance.

My question is why can't you use 304 grade? As I understand it the major difference between the two grades is is 316 is more corrosion resistant.

Various vendors selling online don't say which grade is being offered; should these be avoided because you don't know what grade they are selling?

I didnt see any benefit when using a better grade really, i got a small sheet of I think it was 314 or 316? cant remember. worked just like the 304 i had. rolled it. used it. tossed it.
usually ss is what it is. most of the grades are usage specific. water filters, corrosion resistance, contamination resistance, strength etc.

im sure if you start methodically testing and analyzing every part of it - chromium content, heat resistance etc etc you may find some small difference. but in the end twist it up, couple weeks or so toss it. lol
