Not to go into all the details of internal resistance of batteries, the danger in stacking batteries comes from unequal charge in each battery. As the weaker battery runs down the stronger battery will try to charge the weaker one and will put the weaker battery into a reverse charge condition which can be very dangerous. Some have been known to explode.

All of the ion batteries that I know of that have multiple cells (such as those used in model airplanes) have a balance lead plus the power lead. When the battery is on the charger the balance lead is plugged into the charger too and the charger will make sure each cell is balanced with all the others so when the battery is being used all the cells run down equally.

If you do stack batteries, make sure you use exactly the same battery type, model, preferably purchased at the same time from the same vendor, and charged on the same charger at the same time.
