I just received my copper vanilla mod clone and there are black spots toward the base of the sleeve. I'm wondering if it could be cleaned or if it is from the machining etc. It's a little hard to notice in the picture but very noticeable IRL.

looks to me like something during machining. it could be tarnish as copper will tarnish the moment you look away from it, especially if there is no oil or lacquer to protect it. A light sandpaper like 600+ grit will get rid of that in no time. If your into to the polish look, you can start at 600 grit and work your way up in steps to 1600 grit and finish with a polishing compound. there is lots of tutorials on line of how to polish copper.

Are those dimples and a raised logo? If so, I bet it's leftover from the final polish and likely unavoidable and intended to be left that way. Toothbrush and some liquid metal polish (I bet Tarn-X is as good as advertised on top). Sandpaper will kill any raised or dimpled parts in record time on copper and won't do anything for areas that are not already very flat.

Warning, though: making things shiny can cause shinyitis.
