I am glad you asked this because I have wondered about this myself. From everything I have read the contact coils are better because they transfer heat from one wrap to the next quicker and more efficiently. My coils would not win any contest and I still have lots to learn, but they work darn good and I couldn't be any happier. But still curious and look forward to learning something here.

Personally I only use spaced coils, never contact.

Spaced coils gunk less quickly, they also cool down quicker than contact and allow vapour to be produced all along the coil rather than just at the ends.
They have slightly increased contact area between wick and coil due to the gaps allowing for the expansion of the wick (when saturated).

I can run a spaced coil for days without the cotton wick changing colour (when rinsed the wick is back to being white), whereas a contact coil's wick seems to blacken (cotton remains black/dark brown when rinsed).

Those are just my reasons, others may have different experiences.

i use spaced coils mostly and becouse it basically just spreads more heat out over a larger area of wick, vapourising more liquid

another reason is that i like hotter vapes, open coils are useally 0.2ohm lower than the same coil made into a contact coil thus giving more power to heat coils fast
