With cartos a burnt taste usually equates to lack of juice. If it was a filled carto, maybe it just wasn't filled properly at the factory. As for covering cartos when not in use, I always replace the caps. It might be subjective but I feel it does help.

I am not enjoying it one bit . It has certainly put me off smoking the ciggies though. It just tastes horrible, I think I can taste the juice on my lips. Lots of people say they enjoy it perhaps I am doing something wrong.
Burnt is typically caused by lack of juice and/or too much voltage.

Get some blank Cartomizers and fill them with a good juice from a bottle. I think you will find it improves immensely.
If you have been using the same Carto for a couple of days it probably has used up the juice in it and burnt the filling inside. If that is the case its time to throw out the carto and start a fresh one. Once burnt NOTHING will salvage them.
I had the same kit. I found if you don't keep the liquid constantly active it won't work. Basically if it's empty and you leave it the wool inside tends to not soak up the juice.
Iv wasted a lot of money that you get to a perfect set up, this kit was part of my journey. I'm not knocking it as I did enjoy it and it works well. There's just better options out there and cheaper.

Stay with it, Phil. I've never used a cartomiser, so I don't know how to fix your issue, but when I talk to people who are wanting to get into it, I recommend a Kanger T3 clearo on any eGo-style battery. An eGo Twist or a Spinner is never a bad bet, and there are tons of places to get off-brands of them. There are literally hundreds of different places to get juice, just google 'ecig juice' and start clickin. I like The Vapor Room's juice, as well as ECBlends (REALLY cheap), and there are a couple local stores I've bought from. I also recently ordered from eHope too, but I'm still waiting for that to arrive.
My advice; stay with it and don't be afraid to spend a couple bucks to find what works for you. Just remember how much you used to spend on smokes and it's much easier to spend on vaping gear, even if you get stuff that sucks a few times.
