The RSST is the easiest set up there is. However, and this is important; once you have set up an RSST, don't assume that you now know how to set up all genesis type RBAs. When you go from an RSST to an AGA-T2, which is another very good entry level geny, you will have to contend with issues that weren't present before; like the fact that the wick hole in the AGA-T2 isn't insulated; nor is the tank bottom. The center post will require a delicate touch, with the tiny nuts, as opposed to the spring capture system on the RSST.
So, it depends on where you want to start. If you want to get vaping in the shortest amount of time; go with the RSST. If you want to really learn how to set up genesis RBAs, and deal with a steeper learning curve; go with the AGA-T2.

Does anyone have a recommendation for what would be a good RBA to start on? Something that a new guy to rebuildables can begin with and not completely tank before using it?

You can't get much simpler than a dripping RBA. But dripping (from a bottle into the top of an RBA) just isn't my thing. I prefer to drip from the bottom, as in, with a bottom fed RBA and bottom fed mod.

The RBAs are about as simple to rebuild as you can get and the vape is equal to or better than the highest end genny setup, but highly portable and pocket friendly. Bottom feeders and bottom fed RBAs offer fresh squozen juice on demand.

Here's a step by step photo tutorial on how to build the most poplar, readily available and excellent vaping RBA you can buy:

I only run REOsmods bottom feeders. I hesitate to recommend them, cause with a decent RBA, like the RM2, it's pretty much the end game, rendering all your other vape gear useless :)

Check out the REOsmods forum here on ECF if you get a chance. Here's a link:

if you learn on an aga-t2, you'll basically be able to build anything afterwards. it's probably more frustrating to learn than anything else, though, so if you don't have much patience, it might not be the best place to start...

for something relatively easy to set up just to learn the basics, an rsst is a good genesis-style to start on, or an igo-l or smok octopus are both good drippers.

I started on an AGA-T, took me about two weeks (daily playing with it) to really mastering it.

if you want to get a genny going ASAP then it's hard to beat a RSST (or AC9, the original, but it's $100+ from the RSST)

for dripper, yeah, an igo-l, igo-w are pretty good, there is a phoenix v5 from fasttech (called nimbus / chimbus or something like that) that a lot of folks here are raving bout and will set you back about $6 shipped

The guys at the local vape shop said the same thing when I bought an aga. It and the RSST were side by side in the case. The owner tried to talk me out of it but I wouldn't listen. It was the most frustrating few days I've had since I started vaping. It gets easier after you figure it out though.

REO... is "end-game" indeed

Edit to add some substance beyond my shameless fanboyism - I would HIGHLY recommend anyone starting out with rebuilding does so with a nice simple dripper. An IGO-W, IGO-L or IGO-S for example. If you absolutely must get a genny thank then get a dripper to go along with it.

Drippers are just too easy to learn things like tuning resistance to your preference and avoid all the hassle of (for example) having to empty and dry your genny in search of an invisible hotspot that didn't appear until after you filed the tank and saturated the wick.

I'm sure plenty of people would disagree, and I don't mean to offend any genny lovers, but to me genesis style attys are old news.
