Hi all,

The problem I have is that my slow cooker only reaches 140F on the highest setting - This seems to be a consistent 140F, but it doesn't reach the 150F recommended.

Is this a problem? Do I just leave it for longer?

Thanks
140 is more than good enough from my limited experience.
I use around 120-130 in my UC these days.

I haven't started steeping anything yet. Just had a load of flavours arrive (mainly fruits, Blueberry, raspberry, dragon fruit, grape etc). Was just trying to get an understanding of timings for those.

I remember seeing a post from Danny said fruity was 1-3 hours, but wasn't sure if that was 1-3 for the first part, shake and repeat... Or 1-3 hours total.

Thanks

If the crock pot does not reach temperature enough for your means then there are several scientific hotplates that you could use with a temperature probe. I know these are accurate down to +/- .5 degree Celsius or better. Also something to think about steeping is nothing more then accelerated oxidation, to speed up oxidation you could introduce diffused oxygen in to the mix as well. This can be readily achieved by using a magnetic mixer while heating the mix though not necessary in truth.

I've done some testing on this front and noticed an increased time in steeping when mixing at the same time rather then just heat alone. I haven't gotten enough data yet to give you percentages but as soon as it is compiled then I will get that out to everyone. Just a thought on this matter.

In my experience, when mixing only fruits, the crock pot isn't needed. Most fruits taste great as shake and vapes, or at most a couple of days natural steeping. I use the crock pot method when mixing tobaccos, and deserts that contain vanillas, creams and custards as they take the longest to reach their peak flavor. I'd suggest trying your fruit vapes before you steep, and maybe set aside a small amount to try in a couple of days, then throw the rest in the crock pot and see which level of steep you like best.

I've just made up a 15ml of...

Watermelon 12%
Blueberry Extra 6%
Sweet cream 4%
Van swirl 4%
EM 4%

It's been in the crock pot for an hour so far.
Gonna take it out in around 30mins, give it a good shake and replace for another 1 hour 30.

Ill let you know how she tastes.
Also made some major adjustments to my calculations.
I wasn't calculating for the VG part of my nicotine and I've been ticking the box next to PG on the flavours section thinking it was to select them as PG flavours, when it actually means straight flavour, no pg no vg. Oops.
This is what happens when you rush your first batch in excitement.

Everything calculated correctly this time, also increased to 60/40 VG/PG

Remade without steeping in the crock pot.

Flavour was exactly the same. I decided to go through the flavors and smell which one was the culprit and it turns out it was the "Sweet Watermelon" I used from "Capella" that was overpowering everything.

Either way, I've filled my tank up with and I'm vaping away - It tasted better this morning :)

Just whipped up something else.

Watermelon Bubblegum - 10%
Blueberry Extra - 2%
Pomegranate - 4%
Vanilla - 4%
EM - 1%

I haven't bothered putting this in the crock pot - Gonna let it breathe and let it sit over night - I'll test it tomorrow.

140F will do just fine it just may take an hour or so longer. How long did you let the vanilla steep. Vanilla starts out strong and mellows with age.

at 150F

Fruit steeping is 0 - 1 hour.
Fruits with cream or chocolate, or in a desert type vape 2 - 4 hours
Fruit with tobacco 3 - 5 hours

Add a half hour to an hour if your steeping at 140F

Steeping over.

The Verdict.
Can't taste the Watermelon or Blueberry at all.
All I can taste is a creamy vanilla.
One to note down for the future for sure.
I'm a fruit flavour lover and the fruit just wasn't there. Kinda disappointed but I sure learnt a few things.

On to the next.

Try eliminating the sweet cream and back off on the vanilla swirl to 2%. I find the capilla vanilla custard v1 a better choice then vanillla swirl.

Are we steeping with the LID on or off from the CrockPot?
If you're talking about the lid of the actual crock pot (and not the lids of the bottles) then Yes, I leave the lid on - It helps keep a more constant temperature, as soon as I remove the lid, the temperature starts creeping downwards.

I've just purchased an Ultrasonic Cleaner... Moving up in the world ;-)

Exactly what I was asking! Although it seems that with the Lid on, that would bring the temp to OVER 150 degrees. My "newer" (as I have several Crock Pots) boils water High, guess I could always try it on "Low" temp, but I don't think Low will get up to 150 degrees, even with the Lid on!

But thank you! That answered my question!

Good info, thanks :) how often do you remove to shake? Or do you not disturb it during that time? Do you let them cool over night? Let it breathe while it cools?
I'm new to forced aging but just got some tobacco absolute for some flavors I want to try and don't want to wait the 8 weeks :)
