OK so i been lurking on here and window shopping site to try and figure out what to start out with and i gotten some good advice (thanks tomadc) and been reading the "what should i buy thread" and im still somewhat confused on what to get everyone has suggested the ego but i noticed most people end up getting something else or bigger battery i don't have a lot of money and trying to make the right choice i know its kind of a journey to figure out whats good for me but i still need some uncommercialized advice. i would like to have one for dripping and to switch cartos onto and i would like one with those big clear tanks so to see the liquid and something with a good battery life i dont like the idea of a button to much but i am flexible.i was going to get the sd keyring by trog but i heard battery life isnt to good it should be more like a back up but i am open to reviews about it.any suggestions would be nice i really appreciate it

I'm a new vaper and I'm using an Ego. We've gotten the itch to do some upgrades, and it's been very easy to try out new cartos, carto tanks, clearomizers, yadda yadda yadda. My point is, the Ego's compatible with 510 threading so it lets you try a lot of things. When you're starting out, you'll probably get more out of experimenting with these variables -- what cartos do I like, etc -- than you will out of a variable voltage mod. Just my opinion.

i would recommend a variable voltage eGo or lavatube(mass produce model) as with this gadget will take away the guesswork on which cartos U can use, example the VVeGo..3 settings,3.2V ,3.7V and 4.2V can be use on LR cartos from 1.5 ohms to SD 3 ohms..the eGo also has battery status(5 bars lit up the battery in fully charged..this is useful when U rush out and can grab a fully charged battery..a very practical and sensible gadget..just love my VVeGo (2 options 650 mAh or 900 mAh)..what more U want in an e-cig..i am loving it..happy vaping every1..regards mafig ps coupled with dual coil cartomizer & bottle of fav e-liquid,good for 1/2 day vaping on my 650 mAh

An ego works great. If you aren't wanting a tube type shape, the box mods are great too. Madvapes and Maximum Vapors are probably your best bet for prices and satisfaction. I agree with the 510 connection because there are just more options once you buy the model you like.
I would like to add that no matter what you buy to start, you will want to try something else. It's just how it goes! I still use my ego almost daily.

I do not recommend Go go or anything else has a proprietary threading as your first model. For Ego size and up I recommend 510 threading so you will be able to try the widest array of stuff -atomizers, cartomizers, carto tanks etc.

I prefer the Ego-shape Riva 510 kits from Liberty-Flights.com (3.7v there) and some prefer the Kgo from Hoosier which I think is also 3.7v.

Don't sweat it too much - most people buy a second model, a third, etc.

My suggestions to you is to just get a unit (you have gotten many good suggestions) and
just get started. You will more than likely get another unit later on as you learn and use.
It never hurts to have a back up model, so just use your first one as the back up unit.
I bypassed the typical suggestions for started units and went for a 3.7 Provape 1 model.
It has the power that I believe menthol smokers need to get past the cravings and it
worked.
Just look at my sig below.
Juice is byfar, the bigger obstacle. You need to order small trial bottles from several vendors
to see what suits you. No one can tell you what your taste buds will like or the level of
satisfaction you will get from the different juices flavors out there. So don't wait on that
aspect of the order as well. Most (not all) of us, have a juice vendor we use, that does not
sell the equipment that we use. So find you about 3-4 vendors, order a few small bottles
from each and give them a try. Some you may toss and some you may love. You can also
mix flavors and come up with something unique as well.
Glad your here and hope to hear more from you.

Dormouse makes a valid point, and if what you are after is something you can buy parts for from any vendor than a ego model is the way to go. There are other models which offer better battery life as i mentioned in my previous post. But you are locked into their brand for parts unless you buy an adapter. Either way the ego or go-go offer more perks over the cheaper models.

+1 for the ego recommendation. Another PV you may want to look into is the e-power. It's compatible with ego accessories and uses replaceable batteries and has a replaceable switch. The batteries cost much less to replace if they fail and if the switch dies you don't have to buy another battery, you can just get a replacement switch.

I'll second texasgranny's recommendation for a Provape 1 (with battery upgrade) if you are going small and 3.7. It is indestructible, it is reliable. It has a lifetime guarantee. It is smaller than it looks on the website. It fits in your hand. You just charge a battery, put it in, put on a carto or atty, add eliquid and you know you are good to go. All day every day. Not a single mishap. In fact, the original batteries are still working even though I eventually purchased a few extra, been going for about a year and half or so. Never a single problem. Nothing has needed replacing or fixing. It just works.

Best investment I have made as far as personal vaporizers go. I can take it to work and know I am not going to wonder why it just quit working. That never happens.

I'd start with a $29.95 Riva starter kit from Liberty Flights. It's cheap, but a quality ecig with 5-6 hour charge life on the batteries. It vapes at 3.7v and will allow you to experience everything from LR 1.7 ohm dual coils and upwards. The thread is 510, so you have a world of options. I'd order a couple of boxes of Boge 2.0 Cartomizers with it. Click the 20% off icon at the top of the page when you get to the site.

There's also a cartomizer kit on the same page that is the same as the basic kit, but with 5 Boge cartos included in the kit. You will also need to order the USB plug that the charger cable needs to plug into the wall socket.

Electronic Cigarette - Starter Kits - Riva 510

From there, you can add things like the eGo 1000mah battery for all day vaping on a charge, tanks, dual coils, etc. It's a kit that you will fall back on even once you explore other, more exotic options in vaping.

I think the first thing any new person needs to think about is size and an investment in a larger battery. You're going to want it to last so you can quit. This is why the ego gets the most reccomendations. It's very overwhelming on your first pick. But you must realize that if you try this you will stop smoking and most likely start looking at something better. I've had my hands on everything and I'm still buying and trying new products. I'm just trying to say this works and if you start with a joye 510, Riva/ego/kgo, or anything else you will pick it up again even if you replace it with something new. My 0.2 cents...

If money is an issue, then a MUCH better alternative to the eGo or Riva but in the same size and class of PV, is the E-Power 510. The E-Power batteries cost $4 each and last 4 times longer than the eGo batteries that cost $15+. Even the switch in the E-Power if you need to replace it costs less than on eGo battery. Here are several well supported suppliers:

e-Power

Crystal Clear Vaping

And definitely stick with manual batteries over auto batteries. You will be much more pleased with the performance.
