Stingray X & Hybrid Adapter

I've been vaping off a friends Chi You for a few months now and have been looking at getting my own mechanical. The stingray x has really intrigued me but I've read that some RDA's 510 connector is too short and will require you to use a hybrid adapter which can be dangerous. I've tried searching for some info on hybrid adapters, but I've had no luck.

How can I tell how long the 510 connector is on RDA's before purchasing?

How can I use hybrid adapters safely? Someone on fasttech mentioned putting tape somewhere. Can flat top batteries work safely with hybrid adapters?

Thanks!

This is the 3d RDA; on the right is the 510 adapter to screw onto a 510 threaded mod.
without the adapter, it screws directly onto the nemesis mod.

This is a 4nine with a "hybrid adapter"; this kind of hybrid adapter is the dangerous kind;
on this you can screw the 510 threaded tank onto the top on the battery, and if the bottom center pin on the tank is not sticking out, the 510 threads on the tank will end up shorting out on the top of the battery; pssssssssssssssssssssst kaboom

the aios rda is supposed to work hybrid on the chi you. But so far I'm reading it doesn't fit on some chi you clones.

Look at the bottom of this tank;

the 510 thread is shown.

the 510 thread connects to the negative body of the mod.
on the inside of the 510 thread is the positive center; but they are so CLOSE and they are level with each other; if that presses down onto the battery, the top of the battery will short out the 510 thread with the positive center.

one this tank here, the positive copper looking center pin looks like it sticks out a bit out of the 510 threading; so if you screw this one down through the hybrid adapter, the positive will touch the top of the battery without the 510 thread itself touching the top of the battery also.

still dangeroursly close, but that's how that 510 hybrid adapter is supposed to work; you need the center pin on the tank to be sticking out.

I'm running my Mutation X RDA on a Tobeco Stingray X clone in hybrid mode (as edyle would say, the "dangerous kind") with no issues. Really, if your atty has an adjustable pin/screw, this setup is hardly dangerous. But when using this type of setup, it is only wisdom to check carefully that pin/screw, EVERY time you attach the atty.

When using the Hybrid connector on a Stingray, make sure the + pin of the atty is extended further outwards than the threaded part of the 510 connector ( on the atty).
when adjusting the "compression" ( making the battery fit snug in the mod) do not over tighten!.. Over tightening the fit will dimple the top of the battery and allow the 510 negative threads to connect with the + cap of the battery and make for an unhappy moment...

In the above pic, the circle in the center is the positive pin, and EVERYWHERE surrounding it is the negative body.

The separation between positive and negative is TINY; in the case its is less than a milimeter.

Now in a true hybrid atomizer as shown above, that black ring around the center is separating the big silver positive pin from the outer negative body.

It is a huge difference.

The 510 interface is really designed for cigalikes; typical cigalike is about 7mm diameter, with a small capacity battery; you get a short on that, the battery dies out pretty fast anyway.
When you short out an 18650 2000 maH battery with a 510 connector, its a world of a difference.

By the way, the REAL advantage to hybrid is to get rid of that 510 thread; you end up with a shorter length as a result, but that's a secondary effect.

Thanks,
That explains the incident I had today where I put my AeroTank Mega onto my new Stingray X clone. About 5 to 10 seconds of vaping and the body of the Stingray X felt a little warm. I quickly pulled off the Aerotank and dumped the battery into my hand which was hot enough to melt a little piece of skin on my finger, so I threw the battery into the back seat of the car and pulled over and chucked the battery into the bed of my truck.

I asked about it on this forum and somebody suggested that maybe the center pin of the AeroTank wasn't sticking out and it was shorting the battery. I couldn't figure out what they meant until I saw your post and image.

Now I think I'll just keep the hybrid adapter for use with RDA's that I'm darn sure have enough of the center pin sticking through so as not to short out another battery. Damn, $15 down the drain since it melted a bit of the battery plastic sleeve.
