Stingray X Scorching Wick and Eating Juice Even at Any Ohm

TL;DR Skip to the Line Break

Okay, I recently bought a Stingray X clone from fasttech (I know I know but I'm on a budget) and the SKU is 1795000 as that was the only 1:1 clone that FT offers for that mod. I also have a very beat up Sentinel M16 clone by Infinite. That and the Plume Veil v1.5 was my first mod and it worked pretty decently other than underwhelming flavor/vapor and the constantly leaking from the negative posts. The M16 doesn't have the burning issues, but the locking thread is stuck and I ruined the threads trying to get it loose. The Stingray X works too good for its own good. I got it purposely because the V-drop on the M16 was so low and I wanted a copper mod to get better vapor, and well, it burns EVERYTHING.

I was first using a Plume Veil v1.5 on my M16 with Organic cotton from CVS, and that worked somewhat decent other than the fact that I had to drip constantly because of the low builds I had to build in order to get a decent vape and the constant leaking. Once my Stingray X came I then bought the Vertex V2 and the Marquis because I heard the flavor was "out of this world" for the Vertex V2 as well as decent vapor and I was very underwhelmed. I had to close the airflow off 50% in order to get any flavor, center post builds are a pain, and my Plume Veil kills it in flavor. The Vertex V2 does have better vapor at lower builds because of the extra airflow compared to the Plume Veil and chucks 3-5x the vapor from the Plume Veil, but I like a mix of vapor and flavor (more flavor chasing but a decent medium of vapor as well). So I then went to the Marquis, and that was underwhelming as well. Too tight of an airflow, hardly any vapor at all, and in dual coil mode I would drain the 6mm deep juice well in 3 hits or less because of the heat the Stingray X is putting out! Even in single coil on the Marquis with 8 wraps of 24g @ .85 Ohms it goes through juice like crazy, and somehow still doesn't produce any vapor. The flavor is decent, but not too much better than the Plume Veil.

Anyway, my main issue is the insane amount of heat that is pumping out of this Stingray X mod. My wick burns after 1 or 2 hits, and the juices taste totally different. The bad flavor notes are pronounced and the good notes are muted, on top of an overall horrible burnt juice taste. I brought it to my local B&M shop and they tried to fix it. I use 24g A1 Kanthal with all of my builds, and for some odd reason they decided to do a 20g dual coil build @ .15 Ohms (as if that would fix my problem) to try to prove I wasn't building correctly by screwing down the posts right.

They stuffed at least 2-3x the amount of cotton I normally use, so I thought I was underwicking, problem solved! But of course after they juiced the build after 1 pulse the cotton scorched completely brown on the exposed wick and burnt black where it touched the cotton. I did a face palm and explained again for the tenth time that it was burning too hot. They then did a single 28g build that came out to 0.9 Ohms and this time it took 5 pulses before the wick was slightly scorched brown, but at least this time it wasn't black. I mixed and matched my RDAs and batteries with what they had on hand, and the culprit seemed to be the mod. My LG HE4 battery and all 3 of my RDAs worked as well as they could with the shops mech mods and regulated boxes.

I thought my issue was using either too much or too little organic cotton, so I bought some Vaping Samurai Japanese cotton pads and played around with it. I tried taking the outer layers off of the pad leaving just the fluffy middle, I tried it with the entire pad, I tried small/medium/large amounts of cotton; and no matter what I did there was no difference. The japanese cotton doesn't have as many dry hits and my cotton no longer lights on fire once I get lower on juice (yes my organic cotton ignites even when there is still some juice left in the cotton/well).

At the moment I'm using my Plume Veil with 13 wraps of 24g clocking in at 1.2 Ohms just so I don't burn everything with my blowtorch mod (that's the nickname I have for this crazy hot Stingray X). It's very underwhelming and just slightly better vapor than my Nautilus Mini w/ BVC coils on my old MVP 2.0 (to be honest that MVP/Nautilus Mini BVC coil even had better flavor!), which is pretty pathetic considering all the money I've pumped into everything.

What on earth is going on? Has anyone had a problem with a mod that burns insanely hot? Is there anything I can do to bring down the heat without wrapping 10+ coils to the point where my Ohms produce next to no vapor? To be honest the flavor isn't too bad on this current build and I don't go through a 30ml bottle of juice in 2 days, but I would love to get somewhere in the middle of this and my alternative of a build that scorches the earth!

I agree, it has to be the builds. Mechs can't do this. Even a 0.5 ohm build would only pull about 35W with no vd on a mech.

I think you should go to the RDA area, and ask for some help with the builds. I'm an RTA zealot so not the best person to help.

I do 3 Stingray Xs and 2 other Stingrays, so obviously I'm a fan.

The only time I get this sort of problem is when the coil is too small a diameter and the wick isn't fat enough because of it to keep up with the flow demand and dries out faster then the juice can travel to the coil. 13 wraps lol
The OP has enough wire to string a fence in his atty's , I'd imagine it might get a bit warm . :)

It would be a good idea to post pictures of the coils as another member said. The issues sounds a little puzzling since you've tried your batteries and RDAs in other devices. Did you do a cleaning on the mechanical when you got it? Also are you using it in hybrid? Does the battery get hot?

If you need some help with the build it would be a quick fix since we can all pitch in tips. It kind of sounds like a hot spot issue, but if your atomizers worked on different mechs in the local shop that's a little odd. I probably wouldn't go back to the shop if they recommended to put in 20 gauge, I don't see how that's going to fix anything.

A simple yet effective dual build I like and that works very well is 24g 8 wraps around a 3mm tool. Comes in ~0.37ish.

I agree with the above posters that the issue is most likely related to your build. I have three Stingrays including an"X" which I use with five different RDAs and have never experienced a similar problem. I typically build higher resistance, 0.6 dual micros which is 6/7 x 2.4 mm. I install the coils vertically and Z- wick (organic cotton) over the center post with tails in the well, kind of snug but not too tight. I probably drip 7 drops every 5 hits and only re-wick to dry burn or for drastic flavor changes.
