Well, time has gone by, 2 European countries still allow snus, one that USED to, stopped allowing it when they joined the EU, and their smoking level is rising while it falls from the the floor to the basement in the 2 that still allow snus.

This is analogous to the ban on DDT for use against malaria except that in that case the deaths are more immediate.
