Wow what a know it all your co-worker is. Did you remind her that when you get back to the job that while she reeks of nauseating smoke and will offend everyone who gets near her you on the other hand remain sweet smelling? Next time you are outside with her ask her not to get too close because you don't want that "nasty smoke smell" in your clothes.

Ignorant may be a better word to use than stupid—at least if one entertains any hope of communicating with these types—but the facts are clear and beyond dispute:

"...As 5300 of the estimated 10,000–100,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke have ever been identified, we already have more comprehensive knowledge of the chemical constituents of electronic cigarettes than tobacco ones...[tobacco-Specific NitrosAmines] have been detected [in e-cigarette vapor] in two studies at trace levels...and it is orders of magnitude lower than TSNA levels in regular cigarettes...electronic cigarettes contain only 0.07–0.2 percent of the TSNAs present in cigarettes, a 500-fold to 1400-fold reduction in concentration."

Again, I rely on my old standy:

"Oh, really? How so?"

And let them provide the (mis)information as to why it's worse as opposed to me being on the defensive which has the unfortunate side effect of making me look guilty as charged. People like your colleague don't seem to feel so smart as they're fumbling their words trying to back up what they just said.

i know thats harsh but she would do it to herself. she seems its acceptable to continue smoking and tried to convince me to put down my PV and pick up a cigarette. well i dont really want her to die but i dont care if she gets COPD or a host of all other bad stuff. maybe if that happens she wont think the PV is bad after all.

YouTube - Tar in Cigarette - Still want to smoke? - Quit Smoking
maybe she should watch this. pv's contain none of this

But every now and then, I run into a meat eater who, for whatever reason, feels defensive about eating meat. All I say is "I'll have that without the bacon," and they launch into a list of (often laughable) reasons why meat is necessary, vegetarianism is destroying the world, etc.

You met the same thing; someone who finds your choice threatening.

That's actually a great analogy. For many people, there is a deep-seated need to have others agree with their choices, whatever they may be, and those people are threatened and offended when others don't make the same choices. Look at the fiery debates over whether certain belived (by some people) movies/books/music are good or not. Same thing.

I am always amazed when people are offended because I don't enjoy what they do even when I'm not making any comment about it.

Ignorant may be a better word to use than stupid

There is no shame in ignorance. Being ignorant of something simply means that you don't know about it, and we are all ignorant of more things than not. The crime is being ignorant of something but thinking that you are not.

On the other hand, Frank Zappa once said "Stupidity has a certain charm -- ignorance does not."

It could be said about the OP angry lady scenerio that she could be justifying her cig smoking. Down deep every smoker knows it could kill them in the end. She is just using displacement of feelings towards herself upon others. Don't take it personal.

Great point and allows room for us to pity this lady for her fear rather than judge her for her stupidity.

She is the same as any addict who wants to continue their addiction...she looked for and found....which is not hard on the internet.......reasons that helped her justify what she wanted to justify ..........this woman obviously feels threatened by something maybe her own addiction.....

Each day I slowly approach my breaking point in regards to stupidity, and if I reach that point, the next idiot gets told so.

I try to be nice, I really do, but in this instance I might have had to just tell her she is an idiot.
Depends on what my tolerance level was at that point in time.

And yes, if she is ignorant AND unwilling to listen, she is stupid.

i got into a heated debate today at work. a person that works on 3rd shift(i work 2nd) was outside having a cigarette and i was vapping. woman says "you know that thing is worse than cigarettes". i think my response was something along the lines of, your kidding me right? she tried to tell me that e-cigs are dangerous and that they are "full of synthetics". she said that she did her "research". i told her that her "research" was based solely on propaganda designed to protect the big tobacco and pharama companies.she wouldnt even hear my side of the argument and basically told me to shut up and she "new it all".the cigarette she was smoking contains 4,000 chemicals including lovely arsenic, formaldehyde, and hydrogen cyanide(zyklon-b poison in concentration camps). some of the research out on e cigs is misinformation to the extreme and much of it is published by a so called "trusted FDA". i have had quite a few positive experiences people asking me where i got it and how much i paid to it. i have had some people not interested in trying it because they have a closed mind and dont think it would work for them.

this woman was the first that i came across that tried to convince me that e cigs are evil. she even told me they were already banned(what a dumbass really, the courts threw the book at the fda recently). this woman can have her precious cigarettes. i hope she dies from lung cancer. i have made a very positive step in life getting rid of nasty tobacco and she just tried to convince me that i should get rid of the PV and return to smoking. i have lost all respect for that woman that that point. protecting cigarettes WTF.

Many good responses here and you do have some good thoughts. My added .02 :

Try to remember when you were a hardcore smoker and were treated with disdain. Many non-smokers and ex-smokers would chime in with their opinion about your habit. Some had an honest concern, some were holier than thou bullies. Some times you didn't give a hoot to their motivation -- "can't they just leave me be!".

I'm not suggesting you intentionally precipitated her anger -- just trying to additionally explain her natural defensive response.

I try to keep this in mind around smokers -- they really have become an accepted demographic to chastise, and they know it.

I excuse myself from overheating encounters and hope that rational questions will be proffered in the future.

Maybe, just maybe, she might need you/me to cross the street.

For some it is a money thing.
I ran into a gent last night at a meeting and saw that he had gone back to smoking after having quit cold turkey for the past several months.
I reminded him of the E-Cig and how it worked and he said that when he was ready to quit again, he would just go to the VA and get the Nicotine patch for free. So why buy a e-cig.
