Sub-ohm vaping? I like it, but am I doing it right??

I use 0.5 ohm coils BUT I always vape at about 14-16 watts. I hate any higher.

I read threads about sub-ohm vaping and everyone talks about at least 50W, if not higher. I've tried it and it about killed me! Found it very unpleasant.

So I went back and tried non-sub-ohm vaping, and it doesn't taste half as good, so I've stuck with 0.5 ohm coils but leave it at 14-16 watts.

Is this normal or am I batsh1t crazy? ;)

You should feel comfortable vaping in any way that satisfies you. I vape for my own gratification, I don't need to measure my gear or my builds against others. That being said, if you're using a regulated VW device, when you set it to 50W you get 50W no matter what your resistance is (.5ohm or 2.5ohm - it's still 50W). However, you may get more vapor production with a higher resistance build that covers more surface area (8 coils wraps vs 3 coil wraps for example).

You're not vaping that much differently from myself. :thumb:

For years I was a "tootle puffer", low power and higher ohm coils. Then I starting building my own coils with RBA's, and started experimenting with sub-ohm vaping. It was a process over time.

Today I am using 0.6 ohm coils on my RDA, at around 30 watts power. I've gone from being a mouth-to-lung vaper to a direct-to-lung vaper. I repeat, this was a process over time and not something that I did overnight.

Was the vape too hot for you?

Also, most vapers reduce their nicotine ratio by at least 50% when they move to subΩ coils/high wattage vaping. Very unpleasant if you don't do that.

Nothing right or wrong about it. As long as you're satisfied, that's all that matters. There's a lot more to it than ohms and watts. People who vape at what seems like ridiculously high wattages, are generally using atomizers and chuff caps which provide huge airflow, in order to keep the coils relatively cool. Other factors besides ohms and watts include wire size, wire type, wicking technique, wicking material, juice composition, chamber size, etc.

If you like it you are doing it right for you.

Ignore all those who think that everyone must do high watts.
Ignore all those who think high watts are stupid.

Do what works for you.

Sub ohm at around.5 or .6 too. Don't have any crazy builds. Just normal every day simple builds. Occasionally I'll do a simple twisted wire build. No matter what, I keep watts around 25-30. Plenty enough for any of my rda simple builds to give nice cloud effect or not when it's not the appropriate time/place. High watts are not enjoyable to me either. Plus runs batt down to quick.

I sub Ohm vape at 8-15.5 watts.

Tge right way to sub Ohm is find a wattage that gives you a satisfying vape and keep you off the stinkies.

This is a good point. I still high ohm vape, mostly for stealth and I use high nic juice (24mg) when not at home. But most of my non-stealth vape liquid (90% of my juice now) is more for enjoying sub ohm at home. When I first tried Subbing, I got some 12mg liquid with the setup I got, that was fine for me. Then I tried a 24mg that I had and in 2 hours I had to dump that liquid out of the tank. I eventually tried some 2mg and 6 mg liquids, tried to go back to 12mg. I couldn't. It was somewhat manageable. The throat hit was nice, but I got headaches and sweats from just a couple puffs.

Another point I don't know if all coils are the same. But I am surprised to hear that you have any success vaping at .5. Honestly while its probably enough power on something like nickel that gets hot fast and swings down 15-20w for 400F on temp control (never vape NI or TI in anything but), but the resistance is too high for that. I can't get my .4 Herk+ coils to even fire at anything less than 25w or if it is, the ramp up is so slow that I get no discernible vapor.

totally normal. if you enjoy vaping at 100W more power to you, if you enjoy vaping at 10W there is absolutely nothing wrong with that either.

Vaping at higher wattages doesn't make you a more legit sub ohm vaper by any means. And by no means is this a who's got a bigger stick contest either. Whatever gets you off the stinkies.

As everyone else indicates, if you're happy, you're doing it right.

I'm all over the board with my vaping style. What I am finding is that I don't care for a super-tight draw. I even have airflow adapters for my Protanks! I run everywhere between 8.5-50w. Just depends on my build and my mood

Sounds pretty much like me.I build my coils between .3-.4 ohms, and when using my regulated mods,i stay around 30-35 watts, just like the op,i don't like it any higher than that.

Vaping at any wattage/voltage has too many variables to pigeonhole oneself as low/med/high vaper. I'm comfortable on some devices at 35 to 55W, and on other devices 120 to 170W. Depends on what you are vaping, how you draw on the drip tip, tank/rda/rta, thickness of juice, age and ability to hit it like your life depends on it.
