Switching From Ciggs To eLiquids - What I've Noticed So Far

Although I'm not entirely convinced that eliquid is a "safe" thing to be doing, per-say, I do feel that it is a MUCH safer alternative to tobacco. It's been a month and a half since I taking the leap after 15 years of being a smoker, I've noticed more than a few things since making the switch:

1. I can "smell" cigarettes. Everywhere. Ever since I kicked the habit, my car miraculously started smelling like an ash-tray, and now when I'm at the grocery store, it's soooo easy to spot who smokes and who doesn't based on smell. "You mean, I used to walk around smelling like THAT!?! Yowza!"

2. I don't freak out when I know I'll be without a vape for a few hours. While addicted to tobacco, the sheer thought of being without one for a few hours would cause much anxiety and make me start to geek out. I find myself reaching for nicotine on a less frequent basis, which brings me to my next point,,,

3. Nicotine gets a bad rap. I'm not saying that nicotine is good for you or anything, far from it, but without all of the other junk associated with tobacco, (i.e. tar, carbon monoxide, preservatives, etc), nicotine by itself seems much more subtle of a substance than I previously thought. Perhaps along the lines of caffeine, but more addictive? I'd say so.

4. Lungs / Throat / Lung Function: I haven't been exercising much lately so I don't have a whole lot to report on that, but I've noticed a HUGE difference in a lack of lung and throat congestion. I mean, I sing, and I CAN HIT A CLEAR NOTE AT ANY TIME OF DAY PERIOD which I've never been able to do being a smoker, and that alone for me is worth the price of admission.

5. Cost. Yeah, I've blown through a few hundred bucks trying to find out what works for me, starting with disposable cartridges, moving up to an Ego Twist VV with tanks & dripping attys and finally on to my first MOD, (entire Vamo starter kit for only 40 BUCKS from Ocean Vapor, couldn't pass that up, eagerly waiting my shipment), and my first rebuildable atty, (Phoenix), and Genesis tank, both using stainless steel mesh, (burning up cotton & silica? Yuck!). Alas, after then initial investment, my monthly total including trying various juices throughout the month shouldn't exceed around $30, compared to dropping around $120 to die a slow death on combustible analogs, which again brings me to my next point,,,

6. New Lease On Life. I suddenly find myself feeling surrounded with a new sense of optimism and peace regarding the future. Words simply cannot describe how humbly grateful and thankful I am to know that, 20 years from now, I will be battling an addiction to tobacco, which also gets me very excited to be,,,

7. Spreading The News. I have single-handily inspired 3 friends and countless others to make the switch as well, and THAT is nothing short of PHENOMENAL! To know that you have the opportunity to drastically alter and change someone else's health and well-being is nothing short of incredible, lead-alone the folks they tell, who tell their friends, who tell their friends and so on and so on. My only apprehension with being a part of this awesome vapor community, (my first post, btw), is that I fear there will start to sprout up the same "purist", "elitist" snobbery and lack of patience with newbies that most sub-cultures tend to develop. I'm very happy to report that, after spending a lot of time lurking on the ECF, I've seen nothing but kindness, acceptance and encouragement from more seasoned posters in the vaping community, and

THAT
IS
WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
cool.

I encourage you to do yourself, and the world a favor: The next time you order from your favorite supplier, drop $0.50 on a pack of disposable plastic drop covers and keep a few in your jacket pocket for when you go out. I have made TONS of new friends recently just from being eager to share when a smoker approaches me about my device, and is thinking of making the switch. You'll be their superhero.

Thank you for taking the time to read my first post, I wish all of you a lifetime of very happy vaping.

Rock!

Good post. I just switched and I agree with your breakdown of cost - after the initial investment - even if you splurge and make mistakes - the cost of maintaining a cigarette habit is far more expensive. With vaping you can afford to experiment with different flavors - most smokers would never ever gamble money on a different brand - they stick to the one brand they know. Right there that makes vaping more enjoyable.
And I 100% agree with having disposable tips - I know my friends - once they realize that a heavy smoker like me has actually quit because of vaping - want to try a taste to see how that is possible! :toast:

Thanks! Super happy to be a part of the vaping community. Now if only spellcheck would stop trying to correct words like, "vape" and "vaping" and "spellcheck", lol.

Hell yes!

I've been off analogues for 3 months give or take, and fully agree with what you have to say. I started on the slim e-cigs, and have just switched to the eGo-C Twist (bought from Totally Wicked) with their Torpedo clearomizers. Like you, I am starting to find the smell of stale tobacco repulsive, after 20+ years of 20-30 roll-ups a day!

I know! Sooooo weird, right!?! Hahaha.
I can't quit the morning and after meal cigs. Also when I get stressed out, I immediately go to a analog
Hey, don't sweat it. I mean, you're doing so GOOD compared to where you came from, right!?! Baby steps! Guess what, I started quitting the same way, just couldn't get past those final 2-3 a day, that is totally NORMAL! After a while the analogs will start to taste less and less satisfying, and in fact, I actually recommend that longtime smokers NOT completely switch cold turkey, I was having weird mental and physical side-effects when I first started to seriously cut back, and making the transition while continuing to smoke only two or three throughout the day made things MUCH easier on my body and mind. Hang in there!!! We're all super proud of you, and we're all rooting for you ;)

thanks man! I really do wanna quit.. but it seems like I still need the analogs to complete my day. I don't know how the ppl I converted quit so easily.

You are right.. we are all doing good if we cut down on the analogs.

i certainly don't encourage anyone to start using nicotine but i do want to add that nicotine does have some good effects.
in studies it has been shown to aid in memory retention and in other studies it has shown promise as a neuroprotective against alzheimer's.
again, with all that said, if you don't already use nicotine, it's no reason to start.

#1 is the main reason I decided to try an e-cig in the first place. Although my sense of smell was dulled, I knew I smelled of cigs and I absolutely hated it. I believe I hated the smell of them more than I hated the negative effects of what they were doing to my body, haha, but hey, I still quit! Thanks for the post though, great read, and salute to a fellow VAMO user! :)

great post. I agree with all points. I have converted 2 people to ecigs that have not touched analogs since.

As for myself.. I am still in going back and fourth with analogs. I can't quit the morning and after meal cigs. Also when I get stressed out, I immediately go to a analog :(

The infamous morning cigarette always gets me too! Vaping just does not have the same morning feel (for me anyway) unfortunately. I have gone up to 2 months without analogs, but on those terrible "hung over as hell" mornings I always find myself getting a pack of newports with my coffee just to have one and give the rest of the pack to a friend.

In the end some people have an easier time making the switch than others, even after 2 months of not smoking at all I still find the smell of it enticing... I wish I could find it repulsive :(.

Welcome to the forum, and to the magical world of Vaping !
I think you are doing great !

I can totally relate to #2- The sense of dread that I would have knowing that I could not have a ciggy for X number of hours, or the possibiliy that I might run out (I live seven miles from a store...14 miles round trip).
None of that with vaping- I DIY and have enough supplies to last over a year- and I can make any flavor- any strengh I want.
Plus- I dont have to go out in the freezing cold to vape, I breath SO much better-I dont smell and I'm not burning holes in anything.

Vape On !
