I know many you own them and most seem to be some form of Kindles but tho my wife allows me 2 REOs (a deal I should have never agreed to) :glare: She says I can get the new Ipad 3 that debuts tomorrow. I'll get the it with just 16g and wifi but no 4G so any one have the Ipad 2 and think they are worth it. I hear the Ipad3 will have Siri..not sure.

Good for you, Gil.
I have the Kindle Fire--the Chevrolet of tablets.
You will be getting the Cadillac.:)

Thanks Roger but lets be clear (btw she's not fooling me) this is going to be for her not me. I said NO PHONE function in hopes a Kindle Fire would do. Thanks for the info. Maybe if I get this she may let me out of my REO contract.

Well I guess what I need to know in all your opinions is getting the Ipad3 worth it without the phone service over other tablets like the Kindle Fire, Nook or Samsung Galaxy Tab?

I'd say it depends on what you want it for. If it's just to read, net surf , stream movies, play games then the Fire is great for that. I've got one and love it because that's all I wanted a tablet for anyway. I also like the size of it. Slips right into a purse no problem. If you want to get into more work oriented functions with a tablet then an ipad would be better.

Oh, and you don't have to have the $89 yearly amazon prime membership either to enjoy it. I stream my movies and TV shows from my netflix account and get more free books than I'll ever have time to read at ereaderiq.com

If you want a real tablet and want to save some money get a Transformer Prime. Quad core tegra 3! It has Xbox 360 like graphics is you like to play games and is lightning fast.

If you get an ipad welcome to being stuck having to use iTunes, not being able to download from the web, no flash, no USB ports, no expandable storage, no customization AT ALL BESIDES CHANGING WALLPAPERS AND REARANGING PAGES UPON PAGES OF APPS, no Widgets, no folder access, no side loading apps, no no no no. Its all no with apple.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is such a clean operating system. The ipad 2 and 3 are just regular ipads with a few more minimal features to sell more tablets to apple sheep.

Unsure...do yourself a HUGE favor and get a Transformer Prime.

P.s. yes i did own an iPhone and ipad 1 at one point only life. VERY HAPPY since getting rid of them and switched to android.

I have a Toshiba Thrive, I have a friend who has an Ipad 2, my wife has a Kindle Fire, IMHO, they are both basically the same device with different operating systems, apple has the ultimate control over the Ipad, you do things the way they want you to. The same is true with the kindle fire, amazon has ultimate control.

Oh yeah, and price, that's a big difference too.

That said, I wouldn't trade my thrive for either of them.

I have the first version iPad. One of the things I wondered about with the iPad 3 is whether it supports Adobe Flash. Unless and until the iPad does, it's limited, IMHO.

The iPad 3 or any iDevice would not/never support Flash.
Flash as it is now, consumes too much battery and resources for a tablet/mobile device.
Here is a good read re Apple and Flash. :)

Really, a tablet you choose should depend on what you want to do with it.

I have an iPhone 4s, iPad1 & iPad 2. Each is 64 GB. Gave the iPad 1 to my husband, who reads library books on it only.

I use my iPad really, 99% of the time for work. I have huge databases about 10 of them, each is easily over 2 gig, a library of scientific articles & textbooks (using the Good Reader app), & gigs of lecture videos.

I have a keyboard & a portable printer wirelessly hooked up to it most of the time too. I use a AT&T MIFI for my wireless connection away from home.

Very little of what I have is on the cloud. For me, I need the data now as I will need it to make decisions. I also don't have time to wait if theres an internet slowdown (or the MIFI battery or its backup battery that I also carry runs out, etc). Also, altho cloud places say they have privacy, there is never any specification by those providers, whether or not they legally conform to the privacy laws in my field.

The iPad can handle that & not slow to a crawl. But, do you need all that?

Siri is fun, but often doesn't work really well. It was a gimmicky thing for me altho I occasionally use it (but it always seems to fail when I'm driving & all wanted to do is tell it a simple reminder).

Mine is not jailbroke, but for my purposes, I'm happy with its memory size. I haven't found in my field that I'm limited with apps or doing it the "Apple Way" <- has been no big deal for me & I don't even notice.

In addition, the Android devices may now have issues with privacy, as Google has very recently changed their privacy policy & is much much worse than it was (see my post on this in the past week).

But if you don't need all the bells & whistles, & don't care that Google is probably more invasive now than Apple, save your money & get a cheaper device than the iPad.

My 2 cents. HTH

I have a Nook tablet that I am happy with for e-mail, web browsing, reading, taking notes etc. But understand that this (and the Kindle Fire) are not really computers - they are more like larger screened smart phones, without the phone. Nook is proprietary too, although it can be rooted. The reason I chose it over the kindle is that it takes a micro SD card, unlike the Kindle, which has no provision for extra storage.
