I read in another thread that twisted coils get better flavor, and I got interested. I like a good bit of cloud in my vape, but I am all the way a flavor chaser.

Now I'm all interested, but I'm not sure how to translate my build into a twisted coil build.

    So, my set up:
    Reo Grand
    Efeast 2500(I think) 18650 battery
    RM2 - stock air hole
    Nicoticket juice :p

    Build:
.90 ohm 26g single micro coil
Japanese organic cotton brand named "Puffs"

    Wire gauges I have:
    34g
    32g
    28g
    26g
    25g

    Driver diameters:
    2mm
    3mm

I would like to get the twisted coil to also be around .90ohms. I have tried .50ohms in my RM2, and while I did enjoy the Vape, it was too hot with my air flow to be an adv. So, I'm going to say between .70ohms and .90ohms resistance.

What combinations could I try to get in that area? .70-.90ohms?

Also, I've, for various reasons, twisted many a piece of wire around another piece of wire. For a simple, twisted coil, how tight should one twist the coils?

Any questions I'm forgetting to ask? :p

    Thanks guys! Vape on!

Try two strands of 28 or three of 30 and build the same coil you normally would; it should come out close to the same resistance as 26. Wait, 30 is conspicuously absent from your list. I like 3-strand twists best. This is 3x30:

So, as far as hitting a particular ohm with twisted wire use Steam Engine to calculate for you...Coil wrapping | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators
you will want to use the pull down for twisted wire, the top right pull down under material and profile (it defaults to round). You can then input the number of strands and the twist pitch.

At this point I am going to refer you to State O' Flux's blog http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...steam-engine-basic-use-advanced-features.html you might do well to read part two that deals with heat flux as your .5 ohm vape was too hot.

I will also put a Rip Tripper link here for a basic 28 g twisted micro coil. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPjuJ0ZLxLI he will show you the basics to get you through...

As far as how tight should one twist...unless you want to enter twist pitch into the SE calculator, it's best to twist as tightly as possible or zero pitch...

Hopefully that will get you started. It's not nearly as hard as you might think.

Haven't had a chance to try making any yet, been waiting for a day off. Off tomorrow, so I will give it a go.

Been poking around looking at different types of coils.

    This one intrigued me:
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425363526.174736.jpg

Because I've made that wire wrap before. I was actually making jewelry at the time, but the technique looks identical. What kind of performance would I see out of something like that?

    So, 'that's' a Clapton Coil...You want to keep about 8 gauges of separation. 24 g internal 32 g external, 26, 34 etc...

I'm not fully decided yet about ultimate flavor performance yet...I still have a ton of other builds to try out. But it does produce a great deal of flavor. There is a huge amount of metal in the build, so there is a lot of surface area being exposed to the juice.

I can say that they are very clean builds, I dry burn them less than say a triple twisted build or Mundy's Magic Wire...

Go for it and see what you yield, wire is relatively cheap and with your jewelry experience it should be pretty easy for you!

So I tried making a Clapton. 26g with a 34g wrap for the recommended 8g of separation.

This started out find, but the super thin 34g is difficult to work with. Lots more difficult than my thick jewelry wire. It started out looking great, but the more wraps I did the more the 34g started to kink. Once I got the the kinked up parts, the build started to fall apart. Literally lol.

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425416178.424979.jpg

See the kinks in there? As I was wrapping the 34g it'd make these little divots in the wire and then that happened. Needless to say I didn't install it. It just looks like a short party ready to happen haha.

Wondering if 26g with a 32g wrap would be ok? It's not quite 8g in separation, but it may be easier to work with.

Next I think I may try a regular twisted coil with two 28g strands.

Cool, I'll have to try that. I think I've twisted much skin off the tips of my fingers playing around today hehe.

Made two strand 28g twisted coil. I'm sure my twisting technique could use some work. Made two coils out of the twisted strand I made, a 2mm and a 3mm coil.

The 2mm came out to be .50ohms. I installed it and tested it on my bf's eleaf 50w rig. It dry burned all right, but the first thing it did after loading in cotton and some juice was catch fire! I was all O_O *blows out* *scratches head* *laughs* it was actually OK after I blew it out. But it was, like my last .50ohm coil, very hot.

So I took it out, re-cleaned, and thought... More wire more resistance, let's try a larger coil. And man, it looks kinda goofy in my RM2, but...

The 3mm coil came out to be .80ohms and this one did not catch on fire :) LOL. It has a pretty good heat up and cool down time for me producing lots of flavor and vapor without being hot :) it was kinda difficult to get this one to glow evenly, and I had to play with it a lot to get it going well, but now that it is, I'm feeling like this is going to be a great vape!

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425423922.266035.jpg

I'll Vape on it the rest of today, and I may try something new again tomorrow. I think the next thing I need to really try is getting the twists to be lots tighter. I may look into a tool or device to assist with that. And I may try another Clapton soon as I didn't even get to Vape the first one I made haha.

Definitely easier to twist wire with a tool rather than by hand. I can only imagine how raw your poor fingers must be! Don't feel bad though....I started with my twisted coils the same exact way. Then I read about someone using a drill to twist the wires. I'm still doing them that way to this day. You can insert two (or three, or four....) wires into the end of a drill and twist them that way. I use a little hand-crank drill that I bought at a hardware store. Insert the wires into the drill chuck, tighten them down so they are nice and tight, and then hold the opposite end of the wires with a pair of needle nose or pliers, and crank away! Works brilliantly! And you can twist them to the desired tightness. There's probably some videos online that show folks doing it. It's really easy and takes about a minute! :)

Zero7, I am SO sorry that you are having problems and are frustrated, I thought based on the pic you posted that you were a bit further down the road on twisting...Ok, so I'm finally off work and off mah phone...I'm going to post some YouTube links for you to get an idea of how to twist wire from the bottom up...save the clapton's for a couple of days down the road...although Rip Tripper is kind of loud and forward, once he gets into the process, his instruction is very easy to follow. I'm now assuming that you have a drill to use to twist your wire...if you don't, I would recommend picking up a cheap drill, it will really up your game...

    Here's a Rip Tripper vid...
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPjuJ0ZLxLI

And here are several more on twisting Kanthal...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0W6_hTn4sI

And here is our own Danny Brandt's vid on how to do it without a drill. Your wire will not come out as tight as it would with a drill, but it WILL work!

The easiest I've "manually" twisted wire is using a coffee cup. Loop the wire through the handle, put the ends together, give it a few good starter twists, then hold the end with pliers and spin the cup slowly. The nice part is if you use a heavy enough cup, it provides a nice amount of tension to keep the twists even.

Soignee, I do really appreciate your help and teaching me these techniques.

But I wasn't frustrated or really having problems yesterday. I sure did learn a lot! I'm a noob with the twisting, and it's part of the reason I document so much of what I did, so I can learn from my mistakes!

That 3mm coil I made is still in there, and it's working very well. For being the about the same resistance as my last coil, it's really showing off the difference the extra surface area can make. It is producing more flavor and more vapor than my regular micro coil.

And yes, I did discover that we own a drill :B so I will be trying more of these, for sure!

All in good spirits, though. I rather enjoy doing Vape experiments. It's one thing to know how to rebuild, it's another to know what kind of specific build you're looking for. ;P

So I got out the drill yesterday to charge. Ran out of time yesterday, so I sat down today and experimented.

Got out the drill, watched the videos, and attempted. lol I could not get the wire to stay on the drill that was impossible! Then, I remembered I'm a girl and I've got all kinds of clips... After thinking creatively for a few I had an idea and decided on this set of tools:
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425590047.907697.jpg

See the hair clip in there? That's the KEY!!! Clip that into the Allen key and presto coil twisto :D

Made two super tight twisted strands, and now I'm gonna go wrap em into coils. Totes excited.

And I got to play with a power tool. Too cool :B

Yes this is a nice tasting coil. This ones going to get out through the paces because I won't have time to rebuild until Tuesday. Am only very slightly disappointed because it came out .3ohms higher than I was wanting. My own fault, I copied the amount of wraps I tried last time and it was one wrap too many. It's like 1.2ohms, and I was wanting .90ohms. Oh well, I'll know for next time.

I think it came out pretty though. 3mm does look auffle large in the RM2, but it's working so well.

Beautiful coil! You're wrapping like a pro now! :)

It's hard to tell from the picture, but you could try reducing your inner diameter a tad. That should probably bring you down to sub-ohm without having to give up a wrap to do it. I find smaller coil diameters give me more flavor.

Yea I was kinda wondering about that. I kinda figured more surface area, larger coil, more cotton, more flavor. May not be true.

Maybe I need to find something in a 2.5mm I can wrap around.

super easy, fast, and no need for drill+charged battery......plus its a tiny, cheap tool!!

    :toast:

What's the tools name? Yea having to wait for the drill to charge was a pain. I was surprised it didn't have like a plug in only option. With that in mind I made a couple long strands of twisted metal that I could probably get four coils out of before I'd have to break everything out again. But having a more convenient option would be great.

    Yummy too.

That's awesome zero7! I routinely use 2.78 mm (7/64 in) coils in mah Rm2. You just have to be mindful of where the cap is...the larger diameter coil allows for more hits per squonk in an Rm2.

Use Steam Engine dot org zero and you will hit your ohm target almost every time!

Looks like you are twisting like a pro!
