So the tech has improved enough since the last two times I tried to ditch smoking (~3 years ago and ~4 years ago) that it's worked this time. I'm getting enough vapor to not even crave cigarettes. But the taste...man...the taste. Everything is muted to me.

At first I blamed it on not adding enough flavor shots to my high-VG orders. Then I ordered a couple tailor-made gourmet high VGs, still had muted flavor. But now, I screwed up a MtBaker order and ordered it 20vg/80pg instead of the 80vg/20pg that I'd intended, with max flavor shots, and the flavor is...still muted.

So at this point, I know it's clearly my own sense of smell, cause I'm practically vaping straight flavored alcohol with those things.

So reassure me. Tell me about how it took you X amount of months to really start to taste your juice after your last cigarette, but then it happened and unicorns shot out of your nostrils at the end of sparkling rainbows and you felt your pants get tight in the special place. Please.

I know intellectually that I'm expecting too much for being just a month past my last cigarette, but it's kinda bumming me out to hear people raving about swimming in flavor while I spend half the day barely being able to distinguish between mine.

It's all the more bummer because my actual sense of smell IS recovering, like noticeably. Food is tasting better (good) I can smell the city more (ugh heh), but the quality of my vapes just isn't improving.

Gimme hope.

Welcome @tedigram, sounds like you might have a case of vapers tongue. You might want to try vaping unflavored for a week or two. Plus your taste buds can take a couple months to bounce back from analoug use. Also, vg will mute flavors and pg will improve flavors so it could be your pg/vg ratio you are currently at. Hope this helps.

Takes a couple of months to get the ciggie crud out and much of that happens through the tongue.
ya know that white crud. If you go on a fast it gets the ciggie toxins out of your system faster.

I have nothing against MtB but I've found that their juice as well as vista's need at least 3 weeks
steeping, sometimes more for the fullness of their flavors to be evident. That might be one of the variables in your not getting enough flavor.

Your taste will be back. Give it time.

Congratulations on getting off the smokes.

My taste buds started coming back after 45 days smoke free and 90 days of vaping. The juices I first started with had no taste I could tell. One did not taste like anything and the other was just sweet.

After about six months my taste buds went again. Everything I ate vaped or drank tasted terrible but this passed after a few weeks.

My setup has remained constant during this time.

There IS hope... but it does require patience. I think it was probably 4-6 mos before I really tasted much, and even then, I had to start DIYing, using 30% flavor, before I could actually *taste* my ejuice -- till then, it was more or less a really good smell, and very little taste at all.

Recently I got more of the blueberry muffin ejuice I used when I first got away from tobacco flavors, before i started DIYing... and guess what, it tastes muted. And I *always* vape 80%-90% PG.

It's been about 14 months since my last cigarette, and if I hadn't started DIYing my own with 30% flavor, I might still not be tasting much. Adding sweetener helps a little, but I think some of us have more-damaged tastebuds than others do -- I smoked for 39 yrs, so I'm really not a bit surprised; it might take several years for my tastebuds to be really "normal," if they ever are.

The type of atty you use is very significant for the taste, too -- I use an Achilles RDA; very tight draw, so not much air; I keep it around 8.5-9 watts, because of the low airflow, and the taste is really excellent, but obviously the very tight draw isn't for everyone. Aside from that, the Magma RDA provides good flavor, and Kayfun RBAs.

Yeah I'm up to date on vaper's tongue, doing all the stuff, staying hydrated, I switch flavors after each 4ml tank. etc. etc. I guess what I have is technically vaper's tongue, but it's not like I had taste and lost it, I just haven't had it at all yet. Waiting for my sense of smell to come back is how I'm feeling, rather than having my taste senses overwhelmed or burned out by vaping. I'm planning on dabbling in DIY with things like Mt Baker's pre-mixed flavors + flavorless nicotine VG/PG base, so maybe when I do make that order I'll try just vaping the flavorless base for a while.

It's been just over a month since I started vaping, so all those juices I bought to start with are fully steeped now, still muted taste. I lost the white film in my mouth almost immediately thankfully (I completely forgot my tongue was supposed to be so pink, holy cow) and like I said I can definitely tell my sense of smell is recovering, it just isn't impacting my vape experience yet unfortunately.

Congratulations on getting off the smokes.

Well, that's alright I guess. 45 days would be great, since I'm about 12 off from that. 4-6 months would be livable. I mean I know of course that it's unlikely I'll NEVER taste my juice, just feeling particularly bummed about it after having received that super-strong juice order and finding I could barely taste that either.

I'm definitely in the situation where everything just tastes undefinable and vaguely sweet, so. I can wait. I just hope it's not too much longer.

That describes pretty well exactly how I tasted vapes for that 4-6 months. The blueberry muffin I like is from sweet-vapes.com, and they do allow you to customize your PG/VG ratio. I do add a little sweetener to it, and sometimes mix in a little banana nut bread, which is pretty good -- I always have liked blueberries and bananas together; blueberries and banana nut bread for breakfast is like the breakfast of champions, to me. :D

If it persists, you might look into getting into DIY, which would allow you to go really heavy on flavoring as I do. Lots of great how-tos and recipes in the DIY forum.

At first, when I really couldn't taste much (but really wasn't aware of it, since it'd been that way for decades), I used a very light flavored tobacco vape, Virginia. It tasted a lot like the Virginia Slims cigarettes i smoked for decades (myfreedomsmokes.com's Virginia Tobacco).

its called sensory overload.... the body has a special way of shutting down receptors to tastes and smells it is constantly exposed to.. ever go to someones house and being there you smell a rather unplesant odor and wonder why they dont smell it?? or wonder how the people can work at a sewer plant and not throw up every day? They just dont smell it any more... same thing happens with taste too....

find another favorite flavor and swap off between the 2 every 2-4 days.... :)

Your device / coils are going to play a large role in the production of flavor, what set up do you use ?
Not all juice company's are created equal, you might have a visit to one of your local vape shops and sample some ( I'm just assuming the ban still doesn't apply to vape shops)
Remember vaping is risk reduction and to keep it that way my suggestion would not be to add "double shots" of flavor, don't get me wrong I'm a flavor junkie but my ultimate goal is to lower my risk of lung disease and I don't feel I need 25 % flavoring in my juice to have it "taste" good.Your still getting what your body craves accept now you can climb stairs, run ( if you wanted to), wake up without the dreaded phlegm hacking and live longer ..........

Took a while, for me their is taste returning and then vapers tongue.

When I started, my taste buds were destroyed by the years of smoking. It too a good while for me. Some simple flavors I could taste in 3-4 weeks, but the complex, delicate, flavors were a lot longer. One day it just occurred to me that, "wow, I am detecting subtleties". It just took a while.

For vapers tongue, I just get a physical over-load of the flavor and, for some reason don't taste the flavor. I just switch flavors. I am amazed at all of the things that influence taste, and therefore, my tasting of my vape.

I get a little dehydrated when vaping so I drink water. As I drink water, I swish it around my mouth. It just helps.

Something something Lemonade, Try that. It has strong notes. When you cant taste your juices try to stay away from bakery e juices. They are usually bland. From my experiences.

My experience is that my taste has come back in stages. It did take about 6 months for me to notice a noticeable difference. From there is has continued to get amplified, but again it comes in stages, with every stage being noticeably better then it was before. It does seem to take along time, but it is worth every bit of waiting.

Sounds pretty similar to what I've experienced, though with the addition of, every so often my tastebuds apparently just go completely insane, and EVERYTHING tastes bad, or odd, not just vapor. That doesn't seem to last long, a day or two at most, but it's certainly frustrating when it does happen. Besides my main ADV, I also keep 2 others handy, and one of them is some variation of tobacco flavor -- lately, a sweet cherry pipe tobacco flavor, though I also make a "smocha" -- smoky coffee and chocolate/vanilla.

Don't think I could have gotten thru all the vagaries of my tastebuds during their healing, if not for DIY.

I DIY and I have a super strength peppermint flavor that seems to cure vape tongue for me. (It also cures sinus congestion, phlegm buildup in the lungs, bad breath, the measels and jock itch. I call it snake oil. Lol!) An unflavored with a touch of menthol will do the same thing for me. The minty flavors seem to cleanse my palate for some reason.
