I switch up between silica, ekowool, and cotton. I also change the diameter of the coil depending on the wick. I let the new coil sit some since this morning and switched atties for a while, just switched back, same "rust" flavor a before. Maybe i got a bad batch, but I'll be looking for something else soon.

Edit: Funny thing is, after a few "toots", the "rust" flavor settles down and is very subtle again like after the initial break-in period. I usually set up 2 atties and switch back and forth daily, so I don't want every time I switch for there to be a bad taste I have to "power through", a huge annoyance at the very least!

Sounds like you got some contaminated wire. Temco is actually pretty vape-friendly, so if you contact them and explain what's going on, they might send you a replacement. I imagine that many vape vendors resell Temco wire and it would be a disaster for them if they are flooding the market with bad product.

Update for those who may come across this thread. I contacted TEMCO and they immediately shipped out another batch of the 30g kanthal. Got it in yesterday and built a couple atties, and everything is great! Still not sure what it was about the first batch, but the second is night and day. Very clean.

Big thanx to TEMCO for taking care of me. It's nice to see a company that practices great customer service, whether the order was for $5 or $5000. I'll be going back to them in the future.

I got a similar experience with a batch of the annealed. I went to the Temco site and looked and it does seem they are all annealed. Ive been ordering Temco Kanthal since I started using RBAs and its always been good. The one spool I got , think it was a 34 gauge was the first one that came with the word "annealed" and had the same experience as you did. I just got another spool today and will give it a try to see if it has a neutral taste as all the others.

Well, i did a full rebuild this a.m. This time i torched the wire till it glowed a few seconds before building the coil, installed it, and did a few burns on the atty before i threaded the wick. I vaped it for an hour or so to get rid of the cotton taste. So now it's all broken in. I'm still getting a very subtle metallic taste, but definitely not as bad as a "rust" flavor I had before. Not happy about it, but i can at least live with it. Hopefully in a few days the coil will be well seasoned enough not to taste it anymore.

Try cleaning with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide. If anything will leave it fresh tasting, H2O2 should.

Edit: Guess I should of read on through the post lol, and it's great that they took care of you.

contacted temco and they gave me some b.s. about kanthal oxidizing easily from finger oils and sweat... told them they must have sent me the wrong wire since kanthal is highly resistant to oxidation and i am the third person that i know of to receive contaminated wire. said they would send out a new roll asap. i will see how it goes. i will also torch the wire i have to see if i can find where the contamination ends since the first bit i used was fine.
