Hmmmmmm.......
Hand made .1ohm Nickel Dual coil in an Orchid tank working nicely at 20J/415F on an SX Mini M Class

I do notice it takes 2-3 draws to get it up to snuff, but clear sailing from there out. I have a habit of letting it sit for long periods so wicks may be over saturating.

I'd love to offer advice, but an not familiar with your equipment.

For me VW also Rocks :thumb:

I've read all I could about TC and watched just about all the videos on youtube. I've tried TC off and on for a couple of months now with all kinds of recommended settings and others personal settings. There have been moments when TC was pleasant but putting up with the over saturation, spitting, sputtering, hot vape ... most of the time but not all the time is not worth wading through to the clear sailing boat. I get there cooler, dryer, quicker without quirks, gurgles or glitches with kanthal. I grab and go with little fuss or fiddle and am satisfied ... so far.

Love my SS coils in a TFV4 single coil RBA, 50w/450f seems to be my sweet spot. 5 wraps of 26ga, two strands (parallel? Still learning) worked out to be .2ish ohms on my mod. Took a couple tries to get the wicking right on my build but now I've yet to have a dry hit and no spitting, gurgling or leaks. Works well in VW as well.

To each their own I suppose, it's too bad it hasn't worked out for you thus far.

Yep, 500 @ 45 is WAY too "warm" and the coil wouldn't last long for me either. Not my vape
It's warm, but not overly so for my taste. But the Crown does have fairly good airflow which helps. Coil life on the last one run at the same settings was just shy of two weeks of everyday usage, 6-10ml per day. I ran the Ti & Ni coils in the Melo 2 at 530F, 35W and got around a week out of them; design had them a cooler vape despite the higher temp and lower airflow of the tank. And for either tank, it takes about one full tanks worth of juice moving up the wattage and temp to get them broken in. TC requires some fiddling and patience to learn, but the consistency is nice reward for the effort.

I've tried an Eleaf and two Aspire kits and the Ni and Ti coils that came with them. I'm done with the frustrations of trying to find settings that work. Too persnickety. I'll stick with kanthal ... sub ohm or otherwise. Anyone else?

IMO TC is a tool that has both advantages and disadvantages, like most things. In order to get the most you can out of it you need to understand how it works and combine that with how non-TC vaping works.

If you're happy with Kanthal (VW or mech mods) and you don't get burnt hits often I think you have little to gain from learning how to use TC as it's done today. VW is less complex and it works just fine if you know how to use it.

I don't care for Ni200 or titanium premade coils either. And from what I've heard, they are a little more difficult to build with. I would like to try some stainless steel coils before I completely right off TC, though.

Ni200 coils hard to make? You are kidding? What is so hard about them? I made this 28g, 3mm, 0.11 ohm coil the other day and it is super easy. Wrap as a compressed coil and then stretch it a bit like a spring and instant spaced wraps with no mess or fuss.

I don't care for it much (NI or Ti) but love SS- or regular kanthal

I used to be a big fan of SS, until I dry burned one the other day and I got this awful smell. Dry burned it again since I thought maybe it was just the smell of gunk burning. Nope, smell was twice as strong as it was before. Then I thought maybe it will go away at vaping temperatures. So I juiced it up and nope, it tasted like it smelled. I checked my other builds that I knew I had dry burned before and they all had that hint of that taste too. Replaced all of my SS coils with Ni200 again. Now I hate SS wire.

I had read that both wires were really springy. And just read a few posts of people not having much luck with them. I tried titanium and couldn't get it to turn our very well. Never tried nickel. Maybe I should...yours turned out very nice.

Thanks. And I stayed away from regular Ni200 wire because everybody said it was too soft and I started right away with tempered Ni200 (stiff like Kanthal) for the first 6 months of using Ni200. Then I decided to find out how bad is working with regular Ni200 is really? So I bought a spool and I loved it. No more tempered Ni200 for me.

500F is way too warm?

Then there must be something wrong with the tanks you're using. The ONLY tank I use with the TC set below 500F is my Nautilus because it has such a restricted airflow. That tank I run at 460F and 16W. All my subohm tanks are run at well over 500F and I wouldn't call the vape from any of them warm. I run both my Starre and my Subtank at 550F. I run the Starre at 550F and 65W and the Subtank at 550F and 50W.

With my SquapeR I run 500F and 50W and love that setup with a 24g .15ohm coil.

If 500F is too warm then it sounds like you have very low airflow tanks (Like my Nautilus)

I'll give you a little tip here.

When making a nickle coil wrap the wire around a machine screw. Run the wire through the threads of the screw, and then unscrew the coil when you're done. You end up with perfectly spaced, perfectly shaped coils every single time.

While you can do it, it is recommended not to dry burn SS as it burns off the anticorrosion coating. Most likely that is where your funky taste is from. I don't dry burn my SS like I used to for kanthal and the clean taste of SS has made it impossible for me to go back to kanthal.

And for the OP if you do try SS for TC run it at a low temp till you find the right warmth and unlike ni200 you don't use a big wattage to reach temp, set your wattage closer to where you would for use in vw mode. Those 2 things made TC possible more me as I was having many of your frustrations before I tried those.

I do like SS for the taste. And it should be really easy to clean if you never get the temperature of the wire too hot. Speaking about dry burning, I quit that with Kanthal too. As I have found tiny fractures in Kanthal after being dry burned and with a microscope you can see rust in the cracks. So when somebody says they see something that looks like rust on their Kanthal coils, I know why.
