LOL, my snake story. I know I've told you about this before ...

Anyhow, one time back years and years ago my wife and I were riding around exploring. We turned down this one road and there was a nice little house on pier and beam away off the road and there appeared to be an elderly lady standing in the yard frantically waving her arms at us.

I told my wife it looked like something was wrong so I turned around and went back and turned down the lady's driveway. She came running over to my truck and said she had been working in her flower garden and she saw a rattlesnake which had gone under her house. She asked if I had a gun to shoot it with and I said "no, I don't." She says "my late husband had a gun, if I go get it will you shoot the snake?" And I said I would.

So she comes out with an old .45 on a 1911 frame and hands it to me with a clip and a box of old ammo. I loaded about five rounds in the clip, laid down on my stomach and looked under the house and sure enough, there was the snake and I shot it and it jumped.

The old lady says "shoot it some more" so I emptied the clip. Then she says "shoot it more!!!" So I load a few more rounds in the clip and fire a few more rounds.

About that time her son arrived on the scene and she explained what was going on. The son went and got a rake and dragged the dead snake out from under the house.

I don't know how many rounds I had fired, ten, maybe more.

The snake had one hole in it.

I was embarrassed.

Hiya TT. I never really expected you to shinny up that saguaro. I was kind of expecting a story about how some poor sap from some gawd-awful backwater like Alamogordo, NM or Moody, TX tried once to do that very thing.

Oh Lordy, now the secret is out!! I wasn't going to tell ...

Now all these wild women are going to be chasing after you guys because you know that none of them (with the possible exception of Melissa) has ever seen a ringdangdoo with cactus stickers in it!

Oh you poor guys!

I think I've told you that I have a Bond Arms (Granbury, Texas) derringer that has a dandy little snake shot round that is made for it. Its good at close range and I kinda like to carry it when I'm out on our place in the summer. We have a LOT of cottonmouth, copperhead and a few rattlesnakes that really need to be shot. And this old boy likes to shoot 'em!!

This is similar to the Bond Arms derringer I have ...

of course, mine has a gold engraved barrel, custom grips, etc.

I guess I'm a bit of a show off.

Oh, and I have about a half dozen different barrels all of different calibers ... and all gold engraved.

Yeah, that particular round is a .410

Bond Arms has a large number of other barrels and one called the Snake Slayer that has a four and one-half inch barrel versus the usual three and a half, but the longer barrel has a tighter pattern on the snake shot.

Real nice derringers, but HEAVY!!

Speaking of guns and cactus ... this really happened.

Desert marksmen aim their weapons at Saguaro cacti so frequently that Arizona was forced to declare the "sport" a felony. Offenders risk a $100,000 fine and three years in prison. But that doesn't stop sharpshooters like 27-year-old David, who was trying to impress friends when he opened fire on a Saguaro in 1982. He was killed when it fell on him. He reportedly fired two slugs from a 16-gauge shotgun at a 27-foot cactus, and began to shout, "Timber!" He only had enough time to utter the first syllable before a 23-foot section of the prickly plant fell and crushed him beneath its spiky skin.

Poor David. He never was the brightest light in the gene pool.

Even the one pictured looks like a pretty substantial hunk of steel.
