I'll translate my views into coffee:

I love a great cup of freshly roasted, freshly ground coffee. What I don't care for is the oooh-ing and aaah-ing, lipsmacking and feelery that comes with it. More money does not necessarily buy you better coffee. Very little money, however, usually won't give a great cup of coffee.

It's tradition. It's craft. It's in the soil and in the season. e-liquid is flavorings. Some flavorings taste better than others. Some flavorings taste good with other flavorings. That's all there is to it, in my mind. It is a craft, but there is so much less magic involved than in things commonly associated with 'lifes finer things'.

Well since coffee is just...coffee. I'll give my example. I love craft beer, I'm probably a snob about it but I'm knowledgeable enough to back it. There's good beer and bad beer, usually no in between. I feel the same way about e liquid.

Oh and BTW the "finer things" comment was just a figure of speech so you can stop over using it.

Then we may have reached some common ground. I show a lot more appreciation for 'proper crafts' where flavors are results of more than just ... well... flavorings. I don't mind paying for quality. I do mind paying for words. Words like 'premium' and 'gourmet'. The proof is in the pudding, as they say.

My beef is with comparing e-liquid manufacturing to these other crafts.

And in good humor I can't let this slip. "If you can't taste the difference between good coffee and just coffee...." ;)

All you can really do is pay for words and hope youre also paying for your product. Even with coffee and beer. You have to trust these companies mean what they say.

We compare e liquid to other crafts that we know because that's all we have to compare them to.

Beer > coffee

And I really don't like most craft beers. Too heavy, or too hoppy, or just not to my taste.
I like the taste of Budweiser in the can. Yes, I like it better in the can than in the bottle.
You probably don't like it. That doesn't make it McDonalds-vs-Outback, though.

Some people like watered down beer. I don't care what people like. What you like is your own preference. But it can still be "Mcdonalds vs outback" because it's still "low quality vs high quality". I personally don't care, it's not a competition, I was simply using McDonald's and outback as examples.

I sort of want to like this post, but I don't think I've ever tasted American Budweiser. Aand I have no idea what Outback is. I thought it was a reference to someone shooting something and slapping it on a BBQ. We do have McDonalds, but I don't eat there.

I like my beer served in a glass without any speeches or praises to its greatness. Preferably without any facial/neck hair in it.

That speaks volumes of your ability to actually taste the 'finer things in life' ;)

I don't consider coffee the finer things. I mean does coffee really even have a following? Lol. I understand there's a difference between good and bad but it's coffee lol. I'm sorry when I think of quality and craft I don't think of coffee. I think you lose this argument.

It's not only a craft. It's one of the oldest crafts.

I find it a bit strange that liking coffee and beer has to be mutually exclusive.

To each his own ... Coffee is not just coffee ... I drink Blue Mountain every morning ... trying to compare that to Folgers is just laughable. Same with all the other comparisons here. There are degrees of quality for each and every craft no matter what it is ... Heck I bet you can get into the same argument about sausages or waffles! I hate Outback and think their food is crap not to mention their service.

If flashlight modding has a following don't you think something like coffee would? LOL

Wow...........

Coffee has a huge following; many folks are particular to certain types. Coffee from fresh-ground beans is much more complex than from pre-ground (and don't even think about instant <shudder>). There are all kinds of different varieties and preparation methods (drip, presses, meliors, percolators etc.) and lots of people who invest significant amounts of time and money making that perfect cup.

Perhaps you've just never had good coffee?

ETA:

Kopi luwak is one of the most expensive coffees in the world, selling for between US$100 and $600 per pound in 2010. The specialty Vietnamese weasel coffee, which is made by collecting coffee beans eaten by wild civets, is sold at US$3,000 per kilogram. - Wikipedia

Very true. Yes, some flavorings are a lot better than others, but that's all very subjective -- I thought FlavorArt's "Virginia" tasted like rotten celery, but some must like it, or they wouldn't keep selling it. The rest of the "magic" is knowing what flavors taste good together, and in what quantity and proportion -- very much like cooking. I love, love, love, mashed potatoes, a very simple food to make if you have a hand-mixer, but my dad's common-law wife couldn't make edible mashed potatoes if her life depended on it -- apparently she's never heard of butter/margarine, or ever once thought that it might be good in mashed potatoes. Some people just can't cook -- and I suppose some just can't make "gourmet" e-liquid, probably for much the same reason -- lack of experience, lack of creativity, lack of caring what it ends up tasting like.

There's some blather in the DIY world that making ejuice is as simple as making koolaid, just mix some stuff and voila, ejuice. And they're right, if it's got nicotine, PG/VG, and flavoring, that's ejuice alright -- but is it GOOD ejuice? THAT is as subjective and apparently difficult for some people as good cooking.

I suppose I can understand some of better-crafted ejuice costing a bit more -- but some prices are just outrageous, considering the cheapness of the elements; I'd pay a bit more for a juice that's well-made and subtle, but I won't go broke to afford it -- I'll make my own. It might take me a while to make juice as good as some of the "craft" ejuice, but I'll get there eventually -- I'm a fantastic cook. I didn't learn to be that in a couple weeks -- it took YEARS.

Higher prices don't equal better quality, just inflates product pricing. Not only is taste subjective but mine, at least keep changing. My favorite tobacco flavor in Aug. was Congress, now it just tastes really chemically & favorites became Hangsen Virgina, Smooth & Delux Tobacco @ 0 nicotine.
Taste variables include, oral, health & hygiene products used, previous liquid in take, food eaten, ambient temperature & smells and this list is not exhaustive.
Wow... coffee beans are like grapes to wine, barley to beer, rice to saki, supermarket babies to frozen dinners ?? To wake up to the aroma of freshly ground Latin American coffee beans. What is the age range for the "Box Store Baby Generation"?
