Why is using magnets on batteries unsafe? Is there some reaction or something I'm unaware of?

The main reason is that the magnet could move and create a short, frying either the battery, the circuit board, or both.

Provape designed the Provari to accept only button top batteries for safety reasons. It prevents accidental loading of the battery in backwards, which causes a situation called reverse polarity, which can also fry a circuit board.
