In a moment of madness last weekend, after reading about the apparently wonderful new Aspire Bottom Vertical
coils, I disassembled my solitary used karto, and made a vertical coil from a length of G-Plat which I bought by mistake thinking it was Kanthal some weeks ago. G-Plat is very expensive - being a noob, I didn't realise, about $10 for 6 feet - and made from a different metal blend from Kanthal. The blend is a trade secret but is reckoned to have a much higher Manganese content (which if absorbed is none to good for one's health). It's more malleable than Kanthal, keeps its shape much better, has lower resistance, and heats faster - so I thought I'd use it to experiment.
I removed the stuffing and wire from the inside of the karto, and the bottom pin and insulating washer; then made a 20-wrap (!) coil, about an inch long, with the tails sticking straight out at either end: 3 ohms. I rolled this up in cotton wool, and manoeuvred coil and wool into the karto body, until the bottom tail popped out through the bottom end. I fed this tail through the insulating washer and the bottom pin (had to cut the top of the pin off; it's hollow) so it would connect to the copper contact point below the BB's
tank. The top tail I bent slightly so it would touch the karto body (for earth connection) and keep the vertical coil centred. Soaked for a few minutes, and fired.
Well, it "worked". The first draw produced vapour; the second quite a lot of vapour, similar to the volume from my usual Bridge or Diver set-up.
At this point, lucidity returned - I realised the coil might shift and short out, and trash the BB's regulator, or the batteries might not take the strain. So I hastily removed the device, and have been
vaping since only on the Diver, which is rather sedate but very safe...
