I see that I am on the e-cigarette sub forum, and in fact this site is called ECF, and the C stands for cigarette of course.

What the hell is a cigarette anyway? Let's look this up, as maybe we need to:

"a cylindrical roll of finely cut tobacco, cured for smoking"

So is what we do kind of like that, only electronic? So electronically smoking finely cut cured tobacco? This wouldn't matter, other than so many people hate cigarettes and smoking and we are throwing in with the Devil here. Maybe we used to hang with him but we should try harder to break that association ;)

The idea behind calling what we do electronic cigarettes was very likely a marketing ploy to attract smokers. Looks like a cigarette (at least back then), has nicotine in it that you are addicted to, same hand to mouth deal, wow it's even called a cigarette. Let's just call it an e-cigarette for short, to make it even more obvious that it is a cigarette!

However, it is not a cigarette of any form, and not even vaguely can be compared to one. So we have looked to distance ourselves by calling it vaping and calling them PVs. I think we need to do a lot more here though as this is too cliquish, and that's fine in our clique but we need to put a more respectable and accurate face on what we do in terms of what the public sees.

So what is this all close to really? A nicotine inhaler. Those guys are two thumbs up and get nothing but praise, all the praise huge marketing budgets can buy in fact. What we use is also a nicotine inhaler, although it is electronic rather than analog.

So why not call this things electronic nicotine inhalers, or e-nic inhalers? I guess we could still call ourselves vapers instead of smokers, inhalers doesn't quite seem right, and it is the vapor that we inhale. However, getting the word cigarettes out of the thing is definitely something we need to do, if we are ever to gain the respect we deserve.

We could actually just call them nicotine inhalers actually, there's no need for the e here as we don't need to look to distinguish ourselves from the unhealthy practice of smoking. So when someone uses a nicotine inhaler, they aren't smoking, they are inhaling nicotine instead. That's exactly what we do :)

It's all about search engine optimization. ;)

People wouldn't find this site (or good vendor sites) if the words "electronic cigarette" and "e-cig" etc weren't sprinkled about liberally. Those terms were co-opted early on by marketers and that's how most people search for information about them on the internet. Try googling "nicotine inhalers" and see where that gets you. :glare:

Although - and I have brought this up before - why ECF has as its top page banner a photo of someone apparently vaping with a Blu or something that you buy from a gas station and generally reviled here I don't know. But I suspect it's because it's a more attractive and recognisable image to newbies, who might get scared off by an image of someone inhaling what looks like a marital device or crack pipe...!

I have been using the name PV for a long time now, funny you should mention it because I was on a check out line vaping a Saber when the female manager said to me Sir!, there is NO SMOKING in the store!, and I replied, I hate smoking this is my PV for my lungs, she looked puzzled, and confused with just walking away, and I continued to vape.

LOL.
I've yet to be challenged about my vaping (although I won't do it in a store or anywhere smoking isn't generally allowed without asking first), but I simply refer to it as "my inhaler".

most people (other than us) have no idea what a "personal vaporizer" is.. electric cigarette is a recognizable term. As much as I hate to use it, sometimes I have to. Like tonight, my husband and I went to a class reunion and I was vaping outside and someone asked "what it THAT?" I was using my vv madvapes box mod and told him that it was a "modified electric cigarette". I could have said, "advanced personal vaporizer" but then would have had to explain what that was and would have ended up using the term "electric cigarette" anyway.

I do think that this forum needs to be renamed with a vaping term rather than use the term "smoking"

Until we as a community and, dare I say it, as a sub culture get more public awareness as to who we are and what we do the term e-cig wont go away. I for one wouldnt have bought a "personal vaporizer" at the gas station as I would have had no idea what that was but I DID buy a cig2o electronic cigarette which led me to quit analogs completely and brought me to seek out the ECF.

What we really need is a bigger presence in the public eye which, to me, means we really need more readily visible and stable retail locations. I am a licensed C-6 contractor in California and I cannot tell you how much of an advantage having a brick and mortar storefront gives me over my competition. It reassures the consumer and people who have never bought my product still know who I am am because I have a physical location that they drive by everyday on their way to work. While internet ordering may be the most cost effective way to do what we do visible, public locations is what will get us publicly accepted.

Or at the least, tolerated.

All up in your grill..
If they had been initially offered as "pv's" there would be like nobody using them now. Social stigma or no, most of us started out as smokers. Tobacco may be society's favorite boogeyman but the people using it are much quicker to jump on something that looks like and is called a cigarette when they are first introduced to the concept. I'm not guessing here. I have been doing this for a few years now and 80% of new to vaping types laugh at large devices (Won't even take a puff) and ask for "marlboro flavor" etc. I have demonstrated these types of product to almost 60,000 people so I probably have a pretty accurate sampling of the general public's perceptions are when first introduced to the concept.
