You can use coffee filters. Before I started using the Lipton Pyramid Tea Bags I used regular tea bags and coffee filters. Both work, but the PTB's worke so much better. They don't effect the taste the way the others do and they wick so much better. Plus you can wash them out and use them over and over. I bought a box a month ago and only half are gone. The only reason that many are gone is because I have given them to other people to try and because I got a 510 and the ones I trimmed to fit my 901 didn't fit the 510. I have yet to have to throw one away. Occasionally I have to trim off a frayed edge from pulling them out of the atty with a pin or my fingernail, but I haven't found any of those strands sticking to my atty and they are never singed like the polyfil was if strands of that got loose.

I don't suppose a coffee filter can be used in place of the PTB? I did see those (Lipton bags) at the store the other day but hesitated to buy them thinking that coffee filters would be easier & cheaper since you can get them for dirt cheap. Any thoughts? has anyone ever tried it?
Yes, many moons ago during the great spring of 09 "hunt for the perfect filler" when I settled on Fluval. They just didn't hold the liquid as well

One concern I have is that the tea bags (or filters) would be more prone to liquid leaking out? Doesn't happen, I take it?
No, because PTB are made of nylon. No leaking into the atty or the mouth.

Its really a great switch, i have been using tea bags for about a week now and theres no sign of burning and the taste is so much cleaner. Also you do get alot more vapor when using them, it feels like the first puff in the morning everytime you take a drag. In fact i don't know if i could ever go back to the old filling, but then again i shouldn't need to ;)
