WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Wednesday that laboratory tests on popular smoking devices known as electronic cigarettes have found they contain carcinogens and other toxic chemicals dangerous to humans.

Known as "e-cigarettes," the devices are battery-operated and contain cartridges filled with nicotine and other chemicals, spiced with flavors such as chocolate, cola or bubble gum.

It goes on and on here.

This is very worrying - The article doesn't list the carcinogens. Although nicotine is technically one since it can advance pre-existing tumours.

One of the attractions of e-cigs was the riddance of 40 odd carcinogens from cigarettes. If health reasons were the foremost reason for substituting analogs for e-cigs and the FDA are correct then I suspect many will now be reconsidering whether they reallly want to be using e-cigs.

However, I suppose there will be the minutiae of the contents of the eliquids one is vaping to be considered.

somewhere out there......
the report is flawed.....and the carcinogen level is in ppb and depends if the nicotine is dervied from tobacco.... Now if they start using real senthetic nicotine (Lobeline).
Check this out:

Lobeline: total synthesis and derivitization
Research Page: (-) Lobeline: total synthesis and derivitization
..."Initial Award Abstract
It is widely understood that quitting smoking is a very difficult and
often unsuccessful endeavor for millions of Americans. While the
psychological aspects of altering ones lifestyle pose significant
barriers to ?kicking the habit?, the intense physiological dependence
of nicotine is also directly responsible for relapse. Lobeline is a
natural product known to mimic the effect of nicotine by interacting
directly with nicotine receptors.

Extracts of lobeline have been formulated and widely used to treat
nicotine withdrawal. Furthermore, the natural product is an effective
treatment for respiratory ailments such as asthma, bronchitis,
pneumonia, and whooping cough..."

Here's 2 rat studies:

Lobeline inhibits nicotine-evoked [3H]dopamine overflow from rat
striatal slices and nicotine-evoked 86Rb+ efflux from thalamic
synaptosomes

However, the real prize inside libeline might be it's ability to be
used in the treatment of drug addiction, specifically methamphetimine
addiction.

Wow...now that's a crazy article! I definitely need to here more about this....and preferably from outside sources.

"in one sample, diethylene glycol -- a chemical used in antifreeze that is toxic to humans -- was detected. Other samples detected carcinogens that are dangerous to those who smoke them, the FDA said."

diethylene glycol: Diethylene glycol should not be confused with the related compound, ethylene glycol, which is the most common glycol used in coolants. -widipedia ( Diethylene glycol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

It's interesting they found diethylene glycol....but I'm also curious as to how much was actually found in the sample.....was it actually enough to create a health concern? Also, what are the "carcinogens" that were detected?

Like I said....it's interesting, but not full of enough facts to be believable to me.

Until they prove that vaping is *more dangerous* then smoking, I'm not budging. If I didn't vape, I would be smoking. I understand that this is the LESSER of two evils...

It really bothers me that the general message is really "if you can't quit, keep smoking cigarettes...SUPPORT BIG TOBACCO! We don't care if you die faster"

I just posted the article because it was sent to me. PLUS .. they won't say WHOSE carts they tested .. Maybe something from the LONG AGO.

That article is not stopping me.

When I am watching TV late at night they play prescription drug commercials .. Drugs the the FDA approved, just put warnings on .. Look at this one .. FDA approved it .. How many people read all the warnings. You sort of expect your doctor to fill you in ..

How long have people been vaping? Any known problems? I haven't heard of any. Any that compare to THESE??

"ABILIFY" for bipolar disorder and depression
Shakiness (tremors)
Throat pain
Blurred vision
Suicidal thoughts
Feelings of internal restlessness or jitteriness
Any abnormal muscle movements (these movements can become permanent if Abilify is not stopped quickly)
A painful erection of the penis that does not go away (priapism)
Signs or symptoms of neuroleptic malignant syndrome,
Unexplained rash
Hives
Itching
Unexplained swelling
Wheezing
Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
Anemia
Vertigo (a spinning sensation)
Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
Low thyroid (hypothyroidism) or high thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Hemorrhoids
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Canker sores
Gallstones
Yeast infections
Arthritis
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Kidney stones
Impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction or ED (see Abilify Sexual Side Effects)

if your wounder check the report for the companies names....page 4 of the artical shows a chart of which flavor was used and from which company....and if your woundering only 1 cart had the DEG in it. at 1%. out of 18 cartridges only 1 contained DEG. now the other stuff is so low that they had to use ppb Part Per Billion. the charts used for cigarettes are in ppm parts per million.

To top all this off the stuff they are complaining about are also in NRT products and get this the eliquid is in lower quanities than the NRT products....page 4 bottom paragraph tells it all.

I started an eBay e-cig group last October & one of the first things I posted in there was that the drug companies, even more than the the tobacco companies would do everything they could to scare monger people about the e-cig as they have so much money invested in their quit smoking products. Yes you too can become suicidal via taking their recommended, & prescribed by doctors, Champix (US name Chantix I thnik?)

Drug companies are frightenly powefrul - they have so much money behind them & according to some posts I have read on ECF the FDA is partly funded by the Big Pharm?

This same info is also here:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-regarding-fda-press-release-7-22-repost.html

Appears that the cartridges and liquid tested were SE and Njoy.

Well... duh... these are the same companies who are suing the FDA for holding their orders at the border.

Want to bet the FDA biased their report???

uh... by the way... I placed 2 huge orders at eastmall.net and ruyandirect.com early this morning. And am heading over to Beci's site in a bit.

Hum... I wonder why that would be hahaha!!

Yeah, they had me on that **** for shizophrenia. Let's see:

Shakiness (tremors)
Blurred vision
Feelings of internal restlessness or jitteriness
Any abnormal muscle movements
Vertigo (a spinning sensation)
Don't forget muscle degeneration

Doctor says "oh, you'll be fine they'll go away within a few weeks. I said "so what about when my body gives out from me not sleeping for the past 3 days, my knees feel like somones constantly cutting into them." Doctor Says "oh that won't happen". Needless to say i don't see him or any doctors anymore

I always read the warning first before I leave the office, I even carried a prescription guide to the appointments with me. Anytime (with the exception of abilify) he tried to prescribe something that could make my **** explode (not in a good way) I told him to find something else. Hell he even tried to put me on one that could make me start lactating. (I'm a f=ing dude).lol

All i needed was to be hanging out at the bar with some friends and one of them say " hey whats that **** leaking from your nipples." "Oh, congratulations you didn't tell us your were pregnant."
