Electronic Cigarettes

July 22, 2009

Audience: Pediatric healthcare professionals and consumers
FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that a laboratory analysis of electronic cigarette samples has found that they contain carcinogens and toxic chemicals such as diethylene glycol, an ingredient used in antifreeze. Electronic cigarettes, also called "e-cigarettes," are battery-operated devices that generally contain cartridges filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals. The electronic cigarette turns nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user. These products are marketed and sold to young people and are readily available online and in shopping malls. They are also available in different flavors, such as chocolate and mint, which may appeal to young people.
The FDA's Division of Pharmaceutical Analysis analyzed the ingredients in a small sample of cartridges from two leading brands of electronic cigarettes. In one sample, the FDA's analyses detected diethylene glycol, a chemical used in antifreeze that is toxic to humans, and in several other samples, the FDA analyses detected carcinogens, including nitrosamines. These products do not contain any health warnings comparable to FDA-approved nicotine replacement products or conventional cigarettes. Because these products have not been submitted to the FDA for evaluation or approval, at this time the agency has no way of knowing, except for the limited testing it has performed, the levels of nicotine or the amounts or kinds of other chemicals that the various brands of these products deliver to the user.
Health care professionals and consumers may report serious adverse events (side effects) or product quality problems with the use of e-cigarettes to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program either online, by regular mail, fax or phone.

They're playing the "selling to children" angle to the hilt. And look who it is targeted to

Audience: Pediatric healthcare professionals and consumers

This is how the FDA is going to finally rid of the electronic cigarette:

1) Declare them drug devices
2) Scare the American public by creating a bogus toxicology report
3) Splatter said report all over major news outlets for maximum exposure
4) Make the remaining uninformed public ANGRY at us by continually claiming they're being marketed at "children"

Typical Government misinformation to herd the masses at it's finest. The damage has been done even before real tests can be done. The government got it's way. The smiles of Hitler are just raining down on our government.

I am getting more and more frustrated to see the FDA put out this twisted propaganda and not see any significant response or press releases from our the ECA. I know the ECA is new and underfunded but they surely could put together a press campaign of there own refuting or discrediting the FDA false and misleading FDA claims. If the ECA is truly supposed to represent the e-cig community there silence is deafening.
I believe valuable time is fast slipping away to have any chance of effecting a positive impact on this situation. To think that common sense or the courts will miraculously prevail on our side without massive intervention is wishful thinking at best.:mad:

sorry, while i know this is not funny, i dont have 3000$ for a late nite tv ad ( my GF works for a guy that puts his store on tv in redding calif ) and after hearing about EZ smoker having a ad on tv, think that it is $ that will make our voice heard not being right, that this is less harmful than all the alturnatives<sp> is what should be the right. yet it comes down to it is toxic and oh my god the childred.

had been trying to get gene ( the guy with the store and tv ads ) to get more active in this and was getting some where with him, but alas he had a major medical problem and has pulled out of doing it.

Use their system against them. The FDA has put the implementation of the Tobacco Control Act up for public comment.

One of the issues worth discussion is that if they start reducing the nicotine levels, people will simply smoke more, which will cause ingestion of greater amounts of carcinogens, which will result in greater rates of cancer and other health issues.

And, of course, the ecig is certainly worth discussion :)

I followed the trail to http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/pdf/E9-15549.pdf which says to go to Regulations.gov to submit comments and that comments will be accepted until August 31, 2009.

Note: it says that comments must be identified by docket
number FDA-2009-N-0294-0001

It also says, please organize any comments you have in response to this notice using these general categories:
Federal, State, and local government collaboration;
New product submission and approval;
Product ingredient disclosure;
Prevention;
Tobacco use by specific groups including minors, women, and racial and ethnic minority
populations;
Tobacco addiction;
Smoking cessation;
Data collection;
Products with ‘‘reduced harm/risk’’ claims;
Enforcement;
Research and testing;
Advertising and marketing of tobacco products;
Label statements and warnings (including graphic warnings);
Tobacco product standards (including flavors, ingredients, etc.);
Sale and distribution of tobacco products;
Manufacturing restrictions and facilities controls; and
Other.

Maybe we should all report the adverse event of our breathing becoming too clear, our tobacco smell disappearing and such.... ;)

Not sure how many guys would admit to this but since switching to E-cig my libido has about doubled. I think it's all the extra oxygen LOL.

How should I spin that as an adverse effect?

EDIT - @ Bones - Great links and info. That first srticle is top notch but the one from NZ seems a tad under informed citing PG as the chemical that the FDA is up in arms about. Either way, both articles are good positive publicity for E-cigs.

The text release is extremely well-worded. Perfect, in fact. I can see Nitzkin and Rodu influence in those words. Now, if only it could reach the important people and be understood for the reasonable stance it ultimately advocates.

E-cigs have the potential to take a rightful place beside snus, nasal snuff and dissolvables as legal, valid, much safer alternatives for cigarette smokers seeking to "kick the habit" in the least painful way. ALL are better than anything yet offered by Big Pharma and approved by the FDA. The job now is to get recognition for the promise of e-smoking.

Of all the various responses I have seen, that is the only one that should be used.

Well for what it's worth, I have Tweeted, and Facebooked as much information that is pertinent and as possible to support the eCig since I became a vapor. I have shared many convos with people about it both in public face to face, and online. Hopefully all of this will get resolved soon, and we can get on with living, instead of sitting on pins and needles, praying we have enough juice stockpiled to get us through, whatever the FDA eventually puts the manufacturers through.
