What does the over-spring compression do? I think that could be an issue for me as well.

The spring collapses when it is overheated, like in the case of a short. When it collapses, it drops the battery away from the firing pin, severing the flow of power. If the spring in compressed so far that it has no where to collapse, then the battery won't drop and the heat from the short will cause damage to the button & the battery, as well as the spring.
