Offsetting the coils is positioning them so you have more wraps towards the bottom of the wick instead of evenly spacing them out. I find that when they're even, the top portion of the wick dries out too fast resulting in dry hits. With my 4/3 setup, I have 3 wraps down low towards the wick hole, and a long wide wrap going up to the pos post screw. That way the heat is concentrated down low, closer to the juice. Hope that makes sense.
I just position them all in tight formation in front of the wick hole so they get a bunch of air on them
