So, you guys/gals who twist coils... Why not just buy 14, or 18g resistance wire instead? Is it too hard to work with? Also, what are the possible dangers of using a twisted coil? Vapor2112 mentioned it being dangerous during our sit down, but I didn't want to sound like too much of a newb, so I didn't ask him to elaborate too much... Now my curiosity is piqued.

There's a lot of info in the iHybrid Links about Coil Twist/Braid recommendations and precautions....FYI

I wouldn't say its "necessarily" dangerous, but it can be..

What scares me is some folks misreading or misunderstanding what twisting the coils actually does to the resistance...

Nothing wrong with it providing you meter out the coils until you get a reliable set-up.

Running a coil with too low Ohms can cause too much drain on the battery. AW IMRs are pretty capable little batteries, but everything has its limits..

A multimeter is your friend if you want to play with this.

The other thing I'm not a huge fan of is that it tends to mask set-up problems. It gets recommended too much IMO for beginners who are struggling. Precisely the people who may not be using a multimeter, etc... Just don't want to see any friends get hurt..

That being said, if you're smart about it, meter it out properly to check the resistance of your set-up, its perfectly safe.

THAT being said, I've tried it, and have personally not seen any benefit. I've tried about everything out there with the exception of 500 mesh so far, and always come back to my trusty 32g kanthal, single wrap coils and 400 mesh.

Get them right and they will treat you well / last you a good long time.

Coil on my DID is now up to about 8 weeks if I remember right. Pluid V1 iHy I haven't had that long, but is also still on its first coil and vaping like a champ...

:toast:

I also added this post...thanks Vapor2112. I think it's AS important to have "warnings" and "precautions" as it is to have "how-to" info :)

oh Nancy.....I need you sweetie...I've done a search for your name in this thread trying to find that link for the orings you posted weeks ago....and wow you have like 34 pages of posts!!!

could you or anyone else that knows what I'm talking about please repost that link for me? I'm at work and wanted to pick up some green orings for the iHy...but can't really read through all 34pages of your posts to find it..

Thanks so much!

Yeah, it looks like the 14 is actually what you will need after all. There is a Google doc here, maintained by LadyStrick9 that has tons of iHy info also KTK8.

Thanks for the links you guys! I added both of these but I need to make sure I haven't duplicated some of them...if you notice that I have...please let me know? I figure it can't hurt to have more than one supplier of some things...just in case one is out-of-stock.

Hehe...40+ pages again..but..all caught up.

No need to respond to Widow timing...do what you must Faceless....:toast:

Twisting your wire drops the ohm value of it. To counter this I end up using more wraps. Running extremely low ohm attys poses a risk when using lithium based batteries when they aren't rated for the current draw that is placed on them. Twisting my coil wires also eliminates the hot spot between my wick and center post. One thing I have noticed is the lifespan of my coils has gone down due to buildup in the twists. After about a week of heavy use I have to replace them. In that week my coil will go from 1.6 ohms to about 2.9ohms due to the buildup between the twists.

The only other drawback I've found is heavier gauge wire takes more time to heat up.

ok as I understand it, and Vapor please correct me if I am wrong here. Twisted wire can hide problems such as some shorts and such making it easier to make a working coil, but can lead to other issues like shortening battery life and so forth if there is a problem it is masking. Also as twisting halves the resistance of the wire, you HAVE to add more wraps, like I am using twisted 33 gauge, untwisted I do a 2/3 wrap, twisted I do a 4/5 wrap.

As to why twist instead of just using a lower gauge, when you twist the wire, you actually wind up with less if the wire touching the wick, and what does helps act almost like a wick, giving better vapor production, and I feel taste.

Party is over all the pre-teens have gone away, now if I could just get rid of the teenagers. They think they are grown at 17 and it is their god given right to stay up all night eating chips and giggling.

Hahahaha, send em a bill and magically they're kids again :D

So yesterday I managed to snag a GP Paps 18350 with an extra 18500 tube, and tonight I scored a Penelope! Happy dance :) But I think I've offically hit my PV budget for the rest of the year

Until the iHy 14500...

and the iHy Paps atty
