Tomorrow I will be in Tampa hosting a spaghetti dinner for charity with my friends and fellow women's club members.

What do you do for charity..give time , money? Work for a cause to raise awareness..like a walk?
Do you encourage your kids or grands to get involved?
I sign 100's if not 1000's of petitions a year..

Click to donate daily on a group of sites.

Send $$$ when I can..

I used to be heavily involved with The Hunger Project for years because my mother was National Statistician for a number of years.. I used to host seminars and give the lectures explaining hunger and how it could be abolished...

On top of that I was involved in Habitat for Humanity and used to travel to the homes to be built to help build them..

At present animals and the environment are my focus'... Beyond that, I'm always trying to fight any way I can to get people to understand the plight of people in Gaza, and also Amnesty International is important to me...

Don't ever get me started at the inhumanity of people against animals and the people in Gaza...

I do a little- probably not as much as i could. I can't give much money, but I donate art that I've made to silent auction fundraisers, serve on a small non-profit board, participate in food drives and donate on what are probably the same sites that AngeLsLuv does...

thanks for sharing about losses of sisters - the reminder to appreciate and stay connected with loved ones is important (that sounds really awkward- but it's heartfelt anyway)

Well see, we are doing more than sitting at our PC's and vaping..

I have the feeling that all of us always think that we should be doing more, but in time maybe we will be able to..

My $$ situation at this time is bad also, so I know how it feels to be in that situation..

Guilt takes control of me all the time so I tend to sign and sign petitions online..

Even the smallest step means alot...

PS... Mary Kay, this was a weird question... I believe that those on this forum are the nicest people on the net, at least from roaming around it for all these years (Todd fans not included) and would believe that with all the kindness giving of money and/or time is second nature..

The older I get, the less time I put forth---I know bad bad me.

Having a disabled hubby doesn't help matters---feels like I have little time for myself. I'm his doer of what he can't do, his calendar, and his memory.
The latter is a challenge since, at my age, it's hard to remember what I got going on for myself.

Recently my granddaughter was diagnosed with Junior Diabetes so I'm getting involved there and I actually started a social group here (Disabilities/Special Needs/Chronic Health Conditions - E-Cigarette Forum). It lets me do something while still hanging around the house.
I'm getting involved in JDRF walk that happens in October.

But you are doing something.. Your path has led you to be the caregiver to your hubby.. That is doing something and it is a challenge on top of doing the things you need to do for your path too..

Oh! Your granddaughter is a Type 1 (aka: Juvenile) Diabetic... If you or your granddaughter has any questions just ask me.. I have the same type and have been a diabetic for 33 years (this past January).. I've been through it all, believe me... I have been on an insulin pump for the past 4 years, and it is wonderful.. I'm not the greatest example of the "perfect" diabetic, but I know my stuff.. Remember that type 1 is an idiopathic disorder, so she didn't do anything herself to cause it.. It just happens..

If possible, I would suggest she goes to Joslin/Beth Isreal Deconese Treatment/Teaching Unit.. She stays for a week, and as they control her blood sugar, she also has classes to teach her everything about diabetes.. It's great.. You hang out with other type 1 diabetics for the week (with people of all ages.. Kids and adults).... She gets to see that although it's a pain in the neck and it can cause the development of some nasty situations, she can be independent and take control of herself.. It's a up to her in aot of respects...

I didn't think it was weird..I knew this group was special. I figured we could encourage each other and give each ideas.
Charity doesn't have to cost money! It doesn't even need to cost you time. Smile at an old person. Help somebody with their bags. Donate your old clothes or furniture. Call a shut in or someone dealing with something bad. Just give a bit of you when you can. Your smile or compliment may be the only one they get today.

Their doctor believes it was caused by a virus of all things. The stats for that area jumped 50% and it was all kids.

I’m just getting into this so anything you would like to share, I’ll accept. I did just get through reading a book where kids (from 5 to teenagers) have learned how to deal with J1.
As I learn, I post it here in hopes it will help others.

Anything you want to add would be great. A link to the Joslin/Beth Isreal Deconese Treatment/Teaching Unit and a little about it would be very wonderful.

I feel your pain. I was 2000 miles when my sister died suddenly. Never even got to say goodbye. Hadn't talked to her in 3 weeks :( I have heard my entire life that time heals...well...it doesn't.

I think all time does is dulls the pain. I don't think about her every minute of every day anymore..but I seem to forget she is gone at times and still go to the phone..then it hits me all over again.
About 4 years ago I finally got up the courage to print out all her pictures. Now I find them comforting.
A lot of my Women's club members are my sister's age..they talk to me about her. Some even had pictures of her they shared with me.

My Favorite baby pic of my sister taken in Salina Kansas.

I used to help out with a lot of the spouse clubs when I lived on base. I really am missing that community and am looking forward to getting back to it. Right now I help out when my younger daughters school needs someone with a big voice or firm attitude to keep the kids in line at field trips etc. Otherwise I stay out of it as I have difficulty getting along with the heavy duty PTA types.

Hmmm...let see - for the past few years I've limited myself to bags, and bags of clothes, books, etc. - cash to Salvation Army, PLA (police athletic league - for the kids) and Philabundance (Philadelphia food bank). As a matter of fact every time the grocery asks for money for any group (special olympics, various cancers, etc.) I always ask where are the Philabundance slips? I usually do contribute to the various cancer drives, and I always explain to the cashier that I don't have an issue with the special olympics - those kids deserve to have fun - but let's feed deserving Philadelphia families - those slips should be out every day......and a grocery store to boot....no brainer....

Oh! I didn't tell you what I did before! For 5 years I gave up every weekend to help organize and run 2 Youth Orchestras (I had off a few weeks in the summer) - Was on the board for 1 (DH was on the board for the other) - filed all their paperwork for clearances with the IRS - kept track of the library for 1 and ordered the music for the other - chasing around about 100 or so teenagers - over their music, their dues, their installment payments for European tours, etc.

One year the 1 orchestra was playing for the refugees of Kosovo - it was all explained to the parents and the players - we needed their names, and ssn's to play on base - no parental chaperones. I had parents tell me they didn't want to divulge the socials over the phone - I told them very nicely that no social, no event - and it wouldn't be necessary to give me that information over the phone if they or their child had responded to the emails that went out or advised me during rehearsals a few days earlier. This is the military people - you comply or you don't perform for those children. Geesh.....

Then there were the egos of the conductors..........I don't know how I made it for 5 years!:p
