This isn't what I had in mind for my last entry today, but that is the beauty of this contest... you might see something posted by somebody else, and that sparks a song/memory for you...
The people who don't bother to at least skim thru the other posts are missing out on some really great (and diverse) music!!
Classical violin virtuoso, David Garrett, tries his hand at a song by Metallica:

I played the violin for a while when I was a kid, but didn't have the discipline it required.
It is still one of my favorite instruments...
(and David Garrett isn't too hard on the eyes, either!!)

Whisky In The Jar of unknown origin, a famous Irish Traditional Song, first made popular by The Dubliners. Also done by Thin Lizzy in the early 70's. So call it a Cover if you so desire!
Well, the contest is apparently about the artist "making it his own" (it would have been helpful to know this up front), so in that light, here's Talking Heads co-opting this Al Green hit:
This would be my argument that a cover doesn't need to be radically reconfigured to justify its existence. In this instance, Dion recorded a tribute to many of the hits from his early years, and in a few cases, he surpassed the originals, in my opinion. Del Shannon's Runaway never sounded better to my ears.
Incidentally, Dion was 69 when he recorded this. He'll be 74 next month and he just gets better and better.

In the 60s, Dion was doing some of the most interesting music of the time, but few people noticed.

Awesome this is easy. I love Richard Cheese and all he does is cover songs. This is "Down with the Sickness", originally by the heavy metal band Disturbed. Original is awesome too.
Not really a rule, but because it's an individual choice which is always personal, I mentioned the reason for the choice. The next choice could be for different criteria.....or not. I am playing each one and I guess it will come down to... which did I enjoy the most? Because it's a personal choice, I included a 4th prize chosen by random number generation, as long as the submission is valid. I hope you're all just enjoying playing other folks' choices.
Lovin the variety! So not as big of a twist as I usually love in covers, but I shamelessly love the Killers. This is them covering Joy Division's "Shadowplay".
2nd entry for the 2nd day of the 2nd round- the seriously underrated Everything but the Girl covering "Allison" by Elvis Costello.
And finally for the day, a twist by the twisted Marilyn Manson- "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics, originally. I can't believe this one isn't a repeat-
