Ancor the dog. We do something almost the same already. I need to figure out a way to get her to get in the car. She's terrified of car rides.
This is a first for us also. It all started after the 4th car ride. That was when she got spaded. Searched the web and found a few ideas.
Torts aren't loving pets. just feed need fresh vegetables or weeds but only certain kinds and water them. and they need at least 4ft by 6ft of space. I'm thinking hard of getting rid of mine.
After doing some reading, I think I will just admire them from a distance. 
Here's the biggest nopes for any new critter:

needs a big cage
specialized diet
That pretty much leaves me with a chia pet.

There's no time limit on when to get a new pet. Some take days, weeks, months a year or not at all. I just miss everything soo much even with 2 others. I miss making 3 breakfast and supers, walking around or over a body laying where I want to walk. Squeezing on the couch or chasing them off the recliner. So, I can set with one of them on my lap, and so much more. Yes I still miss al the ones that past and think of them all the time.

I miss every single one that I've lost too. Victor is the one that I'm taking the hardest. We've never not had a dog and this is too lonely for words. But I understand that Mr. V does not want a pup, and I'm going to respect his feelings.

The girls will be tired tonight. Turned heat off and opened the door. So, they've been running in and out all afternoon.
