I really didn't have anyone I can go to with information on the vaping phenomenon that I see before me in the present day. My boss has been vaping, but he uses the rechargeable ones with automatic batteries. For the past 10 months, every once in a while he would approach me and ask me to give one of his ecigs a try. I wasn't too pleased and each time returned it by the end of my shift. I would thank him, then go into my car for the commute home, reach for my pack of smokes, and light one up. I smoked between 1-1 1/2 packs a day since I was a teenager (I'm 40 now). I tried 4 times to quit (each time after getting a bout of pneumonia). Attempts included nicotine gum, nicotine patches, going cold turkey on a New Year's eve (which lasted a total of 3 days) and then Chantix (horrible experience). On each "attempt," I was so irritable and cranky that by the end, I gave in and got another pack of smokes, lit it up, and honestly felt relief when I took in a drag.

On the morning of June 20th of this year, I was on my morning commute to work and all of a sudden, I was gasping for air. Mind you, I have asthma (on top of a bad habit), so I thought I just had to take a few puffs from my trusty inhaler. No effect. I pulled over at the next exit, called up my boss, and told him I had to go to a doctor because I'm having a very hard time breathing. He told me to drive straight to the hospital. I managed to drive another 20 minutes back to my hometown and to the local hospital. I found out later that day that my left lung had collapsed and my Blood/O2 level was a dangerously low 72%. They were able to stabilize my breathing and I wound up staying there for another 2 days. It was during my time in the hospital that it finally "dawned" on me: If I don't quit smoking I'm going to die...and soon. I'm already overweight, out of shape, have asthma, and now this. I was literally at a loss for a solution. So what do I do?

Later that night, my boss called me up and emphasized that I give electronic cigarettes another try. I had my laptop in the hospital so I went on Google and did another search. Instead of electronic cigarette, I typed in (for some unknown reason) "ecig mods." The results I got lead me to my first exposure to a "true" vaping site. I wound up ordering an eGo starter kit from there. Days after I got out of the hospital (and surviving on disposable ecigs), my package arrived. When I put that eGo together, placed one of the pre-filled cartos in the tube, and pressed that button: WOW! To me, it was like a religious experience. It was so surreal and without a doubt one of the happiest moments I ever felt.

I have been non-stop doing research on all aspects of vaping since then; from what each part of a vaping device is to the different types of e-liquids and accessories I can get a hold of to enhance my experience. I was watching literally hundreds of videos on YouTube and reading various articles and forum threads trying to garner more of an understanding. I was determined...no, I was obsessed with wanting to know as much knowledge as possible.

Its been six weeks now. My supplies include a fish-tackle box full of e-liquids from at least 10 vendors, my first small batch of DIY e-liquid steeping in my closet inside a shoe box, 2 box mods (1 3.7V and 1 VV), a few more mods in-transit, various eGo batteries, clearmizers, xl cartos, a few DCTs, drip tips, etc. OK, so I've gone a bit overboard, but I didn't want to go into vaping by "testing" it out. I decided to go all-out because what's the use if you don't know all the facts. I may never know, but it never hurts to read another article, watch another video, listening to a pre-recorded podcast, or what I did earlier this evening (watch my 1st live episode of Vape Team).

So here I am on the "ECF." Telling my story and praying that as each day passes, I hope to take back one of the days I would have lost due to continually smoking cigarettes. I look at my first eGo 650 mah battery with my 510 SR carto on top of it and wonder: What if didn't type in the word "mod?"

Thats an incredible story! I am stunned by the wake up call you had, it must have been one of the most dark or scary chapters of your life. I hope you are doing much better.

I am very happy for you though, so tough sometimes to see what can happen. I appears you are in good spirits and good health.

It is actually scary to think that you may never have found the real world of vaping!

Congrats on six weeks :) I am just about to six weeks. I had my first cigarette when I was 9. Both parents were smokers so they never really figured it out. By the time she did when I was 13, I stopped and started up again at 16. From then on I was smoking easy 1 1/2 packs per day of cowboy killers (marb reds). Being in the navy, smokin was easy, lot of people at my unit smoke, that's are social area in between work. So stopping was hard, my buddy got me onto his ego t and that's what I ordered next day. Haavent had one since. And with my big mouth and persuasive attitude I have converted about 30 people at work. Which gets me good discounts at the brick and mortar store near us. :) keep up good work

Great story. I think too many people do not give themselves a chance to successfully quit smoking. I've been here only a short time (been vaping for about 6 weeks also) and I've already seen so many conditions people placed when seeking advice. Need to do x, y and z while limiting total spending to less than a carton of cig that gets consume in less than a week...

Invest in yourself, the great thing with you having so many mods/liquid etc available is that there is never the excuse that "I ran out, so I had to go buy a pack..." Too many people worry about saving money or breaking even... I don't. You can't place a dollar amount on your health.

Welcome to ECF and wow, sounds like you had almost done yourself in. I'm glad you've recovered and more glad that you're vaping now.

Like you I started young, but I kept it up for 55 years. The last 20 years I went thru 2 cartons a week. I didn't have any ill effects for a long time, the last few months before I got mad about the sin tax on cigs and quit I noticed I was getting short of breath walking a distance while shopping if I was moving right along.

I did my research and got my gear and have never looked back. My lung capacity is back up and I feel great ;)

So glad you're still alive! Congratulations on quitting. I'm about 4 months off smoking now and feel so much better for it. I caught a virus in January and coughed every day throughout the day for the next 3 months. After a few days off the smokes I wasn't coughing at all. Vaping really is a life saver for so many people I think.

Congratulations! I've been smoke free for a little over 2 weeks. My fiancé did all of the research and got a couple of eGo C Twists for me to start out on. Back in April I had surgery to remove a 7 inch plate from my ankle. I was given a chemical stress test, my blood pressure was 200/120 and my blood gases and liver function were terrible. She got tired of wheeling me outside to have a cigarette and hated that I smoked in our bathroom so I wouldn't have to go outside while recovering from surgery. It took a huge bill of bad health and one look at our 2 year old to say "I'll give this a try." Stubborn, yes but I'm 16 days down and she keeps reminding me that I've saved over $200. At $12 a pack in Chicago that's huge. And I was a pack and a half a day smoker.

Great story, towrofstgh! Welcome to ECF, by the way! May I ask what compelled you to type the word "mod" in your search? Was it something you heard before or were you curious to see if the device your boss used was the only type and people had modded them to get better results?

I still don't know. I racked my brain trying to remember what the catalyst was that made me do it. I suppose it may have something to do with my career and choosing similar keywords in order to garner more results. *shrugs*. I'm glad I did though!

...oh as for my boss, he doesn't use any mods. He switches off between Green Smoke and some e-cigar that he's fond of. I don't know the brand-name, but he was puffing away at it last week on the floor and grinned when I noticed.

Congratulations, and I'm sorry you had to have that experience to motivate you to quit, but I'm glad it seems to have worked.

It's all good. It's so odd too because I'm usually not so forth-coming like that. However, because I read about another member's struggle with smokes, I felt compelled to just let it out. I guess it worked because I've been in a pretty decent mood all day. I got a call from the office manager @ my complex today and said I have 2 packages waiting for me. It's like celebrating Christmas all over again each time I get another package...'cause it's one of the only self-serving things I've done for myself in a long time. Vaping rocks!
