The first of two Reos, this was Sparky the day he came home.

He was a black wrinkle Grand with a metallic purple door, suited with a simple spring and a stainless steel firing pin. For, these were the days of old, when golden innards weren't even yet an idea in the bold mind of The Creator. Quite the feisty young chap, Sparky was trusty, consistent, and eager.

After a few months, however, Sparky became depressed. He had a good home, indeed, but times were hard. Constant sanding had worn down his stainless steel pin to a mere flap, and in his eagerness he had collapsed at least four springs within himself. Furthermore, the threading in his back, which was used to holster the screw which held up his almighty Delrin insert, had become stripped. He was a mess, nearly unusable, without the courage or strength to get out of bed in the morning. Sparky finally made the decision to see a therapist, and after being prescribed a “Fuse mod,” he began to come out of his unhappy niche. With his newfound motivation, Sparky went on a soul searching vacation to find The Creator. One night, The Creator spoke to him in a dream, and, when he awoke, his threaded backing had returned! He even got a makeover, replacing his stainless steel pin with a homemade brass one, and his metallic purple door with a golden one to match his new brassy look. Here he is, on the right, next to his brother, Romeo, on the left.

This is not the end of Sparky's story. No, in fact, this happy brotherly photograph marked the beginning of a detrimental turn of events for Sparky. You see, Sparky, while beautiful, did not have the lovely sub-ohm capabilities that his brother, Romeo, had learned in college. Romeo had acquired a degree which closely resembled a gold-plated copper firing pin, making Sparky damn near obsolete. Sparky saw less and less use, and, as time passed, Sparky's jealousy engulfed his psyche with more animosity than the flames of Mordor. Before long, Sparky's backing was stripped again, and he had become haggard and gaunt. Even worse, he was being pimped out for use by friends and relatives while Romeo garnered all the attention from the main man. Sparky was sick of being second best, and it was this relentless downhill road to oblivion that led Sparky to take drastic measures. With dreams of grandeur in mind, Sparky once again set out for self-betterment.

His tools were a heavy duty file, some sandpaper, and a crap ton of elbow grease. His food and drink were polish and acetone. His professional focus was kicking .... and taking names.

After almost three hours of rigorous and dynamic progression, Sparky emerged a true Reo. A Reo with promise. A Reo with purpose. A Reo... with perfection.

I present to you 00Sparky: Blue Steel.

Needless to say, 00Sparky is basically the bomb. Never have I committed to such a project, at least not one related to vaping. I am positively delighted with the results. I hope you enjoyed the story, and, yes, he now has an up-to-date sub-ohm kit installed.

Oh yeah... The End.

Edit: For those interested in an identical fix for stripped backing, here is the link for the exact screws our Reo Grands use; 2-56, 7/8".

https://www.boltdepot.com/Product-Details.aspx?product=9713

For the fix pictured, I used a 2-56, 1" screw and its matching nut and washer. Alternate screw sizes can be found by clicking the "2-56" link on the left under "Stainless Steel 18-8." The other fix, which requires an insert, can actually be viewed by looking closely at the photo titled "Naked!" (3rd photo in the post).

Rob has also created a insert for a few people that rides on the divider between the battery and the bottle and holds the delrin in place. There was a thread discussion that it should be possible to put the screw in from the back so it's flat on the outside. then you cut a notch in the delrin for the nut. I'm not sure if anybody has tried it.

I like how my fix gives it a sort of "Steam Punky" look, but that sounds like it could work. If you look at the delrin insert on a standard Reo, you can see that the screw just barely clears the bottom. A nut would probably have a bit of inevitable overhang, which could, in turn, interfere with battery removal and replacement. Just a thought.

I think the bigger gotcha would be making sure the nut does not ground the firing pin. Rob has taken care to keep this from happening with the screw by creating the channel in the Delrin cover and the silicon sheath on the firing pin.

Yay for 00Sparky! Good job. And it's good to see you, zmauls. You've been pretty scarce around here lately.

It's because I said a few weeks ago I was going to buy an LP TRA and post pics when it came, but I didn't buy one so I was embarrassed. I just made one instead.

00Sparky, licensed to vape. You are the "main man" not to be confused with the Maine Man. :toast:

Ah, yes. "The Creator," as the story goes...

I think frugality and creativity trump purchasing a new one every time. "Use it up or wear it out; make it do or do without." I like it. I'm glad to see you haven't lost your touch.
