It has occurred to me that evenhanded and all-knowing statistics might find a significant number of offsetting cases where smoking and other forms of nicotine use lengthened life? And I don't mean cases where somebody avoided a car crashing into their house because they were grabbing a fresh pack in the next room. I'm thinking a bit about self-medication, but, even more, the simple enhancement of life enjoyment. For many, I'm sure it's a reason to get up in the morning for people who need one. I'm even thinking about the possibility that some who died of lung cancer at 70 might have died of something else at 60 (perhaps even suicide), but for the stress outlet smoking provided them.
