So it's now been 4 weeks since my last cigarette. Before e-cigs, I'd tried to quit unsuccessfully many times in the last 11 years; this is the longest I've gone without a cigarette since I've been in high school. I'm now at the point where I don't think I'll ever smoke a cigarette again, so...that's a plus!

I had tried e-cig like products multiple times before over the years, and each time they were horrible and a waste of money, until about four weeks ago. Here are some of my experiences with that (hopefully will help someone else before they start out):

First Experience- "SmokingEverywhere' - fail

I was in local mall, and passed a Smoking Everywhere kiosk. It's definitely a head turner to see people who appear to be smoking in a mall the first time. I knew nothing about e-cigs before this point, and spent 80 dollars on a kit- which is actually a couple of very cheaply made 510 auto batteries, a usb charger, an atomizer, and some cartridges. At the kiosk, I found the level of vapor fairly satisfying. After that, I set out to use the e-cig instead of a cigarette every time I wanted one. This didn't work out well at all. The cartridges only produced a reasonable amount of vapor for the first 10 hits, than turned to nothing. The battery only lasted 20 minutes or so. Both batteries completely lost the ability to hold a charge after just 2 or 3 charges. A complete rip off, and I was back to smoking less than 12 hours later. Didn't try any e-cig like products again for over a year after that.

Second Experience - Ploom Model One - fail

Quite a long time after the SmokingEveryhwere failure, I saw one of these at a local corner store. This thing looks like a pen, and it's not battery powered. It takes butane, you press a button which sparks it and then it heats up a chamber with the butane gas from the other end. It takes a proprietary cartridge that looks like a tiny k-cup.

This worked for about a day before it completely broke. Cost about 40 dollars. During the brief time it functioned, a cartridge would last for about 15 to 20 puffs. Maybe. It was a year between this purchase and trying e-cig like products again.

Third experience - GreenSmartLiving, almost a success

Six weeks ago, I was really determined to make another go at quitting smoking. I was thinking about trying Zyban or the Patch, both of which I'd heard a few success and few failure stories from friends about. At this point I chatted with an old college roommate who had quit smoking. He was always a heavy smoker -two plus packs a day- but recently had his first child and quit completely. I asked how he managed it, and if he had any tips. He told me he used an e-cigarette and it was a completely smooth experience for him. I mentioned how bad these were for me in the past, he told me they'd come a long way and I should try again - so I headed to the local smoke shop.

They carried one e-cigarette type, the Green Smart Living. This is a 510 threaded thing that looks like a cigarette as well- comes with two auto batteries, a couple cartridges, and a charger. And cost $20. Although it looked a lot like the SmokingEverywhere piece of junk I had bought a few years earlier, it actually worked. Adequate vapor, flavor and nicotine- I had my first 48 hours without a cigarette in a very long time.

Fourth Experience - Gentleman's Vape Executive- fail

At this point the Green Smart Living cigalike was okay, but the battery life was just too short, and one of the batteries had already lost most of its ability to hold a charge. I headed to a (different) local smokeshop (I'm in San Francisco, there's tons of them) where I often used to buy hookah supplies, asked to see their e-cigarette selection. They showed me an Ego clone, and I said I was looking for something with the longest lasting battery. At this point I had never browsed this forum and didn't know anything about e-cig hardware other than what's above. Neither did the store, really. They showed me a number of other devices, but they really sell them primarily for the use of 'medicinal oils' that are legal in this state. I ended up paying 50 dollars for something called the Gentleman's Brand Executive. It's big- twice the size of an ego, and silver- and came with 4 rechargeable (18650 i think) batteries - 2 fit in it stacked at a time- a battery charger, and two clearomizers. I purchased two bottles of their e-liquid (cherry and coffee, at over $1.20 / ml and took them home.)

I filled the clearomizers, let them sit, and popped them on the device to try. I would describe the taste as a mixture of burning plastic, chemicals, and sweatsocks. I almost threw up.

Since I've started browsing this forum I have a much better idea of why. One, this is a variable voltage device with the 3 settings - 4v, 5, and 6v. That, and the store had removed the clearomizers that were supposed to come with the kit, and put in two vision nanos instead. So I was putting 5 volts into a 1.5ohm or less tiny clearo and burning it immediately. Also, the juice was disgusting garbage.

The Ego-C + Stardust: I quit smoking!

At this point, I had spent an embarrassing amount of money on worthless junk, but I knew there was something to it after having some success with the GreenSmartLiving kit (which was the cheapest of them all, incidentally.) I started checking yelp, and discovered the Vapor Den- a small shop in town dedicated just to e-cig stuff. Yelp reviews were mixed between "this is great, they got me off cigarettes" and "this place doesn't know enough technical details about e-cigs, I'm an advanced user." Sounded perfect for me at the time.

I headed down there, told them about my experiences so far, and what I wanted. Extremely friendly and helpful- I bought two ego-c 650mah batteries, five stardust clearomizers, a charger, and 10 mls each of Mango, Ry4, and vanilla e-juice. This was my first really positive e-cig experience. They showed me how everything worked. I happily vaped through all of the mango juice in a couple days- and between two ego 650 batteries I could easily hold the charge all day. I experienced some transition/withdrawl symptoms (tiredness, some irritability) but successfully gave up smoking. First big win.

I ran out of the mango juice, and tried the vanilla. It tasted like burning alcohol and gave me a headache after one puff. For reference, all this place's juices are Dekang, except this vanilla, which had 'liqua' handwritten on it so I'm not sure.

Week two Smoke Free- Looking for the right juice

At this point, I discovered this forum [URL was written in the booklet I got from Vapor Den], started lurking and learning, and decided to try some other juice vendors. I bought some samples from Tasty Vapor (one city over, so deliveries arrive the day after I order), Ultimate Vanilla, Atomic Cinnacide, and Caramel Macchiato. At this point I was also thinking the reason the first juices I had were so gross might be a PG allergy, so I ordered some 100% and 70% VG 'organic' from Orb Vapor as well. I still had a handful of stardust clearomizers unused.

The Atomic Cinnacide clouded and cracked the clearomizer as soon as I filled it. The Ultimate Vanilla and Caramel Macchiato went into the other clearos. Both very strong, and much higher quality flavor than the stuff I had tried before. I decided I could vape these happily for a long time.

After a couple refills of the stardusts, they both started leaking profusely out the battery end, to the point they were unusable. I read about some other options, and I ordered a few Kanger T3s and an Ego-Twist. I refilled my Ultimate Vanilla and Caramel Macchiato orders from TastyVapor, and also added BlueBerry Cake Batter and Orange Creamsicle. Since I knew I'd receive it the next day and long before the T3s came, I also tried some of the hardware tasty vapor offers. I was hoping to like it because if I could buy the juice and hardware from a place that ships in just a day, I'd be set for life. I ordered a pack of smoktech dual coil 1.5 ohm cartomizers, and a few 1.5 ohm mega dual coil cartomizers.

Week Two-Three - clearomizer, cartomizer and juice woes

At this point I'm off cigarettes, I have a couple juices I know I like, and a drawer full of hardware.

SmokTech dual coil 1.5 ohm cartomizers: Good flavor, medium vapor. But they run down the Ego 650 battery in a matter of minutes, so they're out. I'm thinking there'd be more vapor on a bigger battery, and the Ego just can't handle them. Atomic Cinnacide doesn't break them like it does the clearomizers, but turns out I don't like that flavor anyway.

Ego Mega Dual Coil Cartomizers: I really really wanted to like these, because they are durable and make the ego battery look like a discrete cigar like thing, instead of some strange paraphanalia. Unfortunately, they produce almost no vapor and kill the battery fast. Same as above, I think ego batteries just can't handle them, but that seems pretty stupid to me considering they're clearly designed for Egos. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Kanger T3: Unlike the stardusts, this didn't leak, at all, which was great. And it held more juice. And it tasted fantastic...at first. After a few fills it started getting gnarly- so rinsed it. And I soaked it in Vodka. And dry burned it. Nothing helped. The greatest success I've had with cleaning/dry burning was making it produce great vapor and taste like cardboard.

Orb Vapor Organic Liquids: At a few days old, they all smelled like what they were supposed too, but tasted like one of these three things regardless of purported flavor: butter, dish soap, or nothing. I since let them steep a few weeks, and found a couple of them had a much better (but still very subtle) flavor. Also really gummed up clearomizers. I decided to order some more of these, this time in higher PG ratios.

Tasty Vapor Orange Creamsicle and Blueberry Cupcake: Orange creamsicle tasted like orange rinds, no creamsicle. So I have 20 something mls of this one I'll never use. Disappointed because Fumari Orange Creamsicle Hookah Tobacco is great, but not convinced I'll ever replicate that flavor as an e-liquid.

Blueberry Cupcake did taste something like Blue Berry cupcakes, but was really gross. Something harsh about the blueberries. I can't decide whether it's a bad blueberry flavor, or it's a perfect blueberry flavor but I have no business vaping a blueberry.

At this point I ordered a bunch more T3 replacement heads from various vendors. However, my T3 experience has never made it back to where it was the first time. At best, I'll get good flavor for one tankful. Still no luck cleaning them to restore taste, and I've noticed that even after just one tank of Ultimate Vanilla, the flavor wicks can become permanently blackened and gunked up. Starting to think it could be an issue with TV even though I liked the flavor a lot at first.

Then to Now- Looking for a reliable vape :/
I still can't decide whether I've already used the last two good-tasting Kanger T3s on the planet, or the TV juice I'm using just won't work well in them. Or maybe I'm sick of the juice and that's why it tastes different to me. I've ordered some other juices to try from Virgin Vapors.

I've tried the mini vivi nova, and the rebuildable stardust. The rebuildable startdust also leaks quite a bit. Both the vivi nova and the rebuildable stardust give me lots of dry and plasticy hits. (I've noticed the thin inner tube of cloth around the nova head has burned- the one that's supposed to protect the coil from touching the outer metal.) And they also taste like a hot blast of sugar instead of the flavor of my juice. I really think the T3 was about right when it was working- I liked the cooler bottom coil vape- and I've ordered some evods to try. But I'm starting to think the T3 is just not going to do it for me, have never been able to get back to the taste quality of the first couple I had.

I ordered a carto tank from valley vapes. I'm crossing my fingers it will be all kinds of great and I'll never need anything else, because I feel like I've tried just about every other type of device there is.

I'm happy to be off cigarettes for a month- but I've also spent a whole lot on start up costs and trying things, and still haven't reached my ideal situation. I'd like to find a clearomizer/cartomizer etc that I like, order a few dozen of them, find a juice I like, and order a bunch of it, and stop fiddling with this stuff. Not sure when that will happen.

In retrospect I think the GentlemansVape Executive vv I bought is probably a nice device, but I currently don't have an ego adapter so haven't given it much more use.

TLDR:

Suggestions for people just starting out:
  1. Do NOT buy any e-cigarette product at a mall kiosk. It will be overpriced crap.
  2. An Ego battery seems to be a cheap and reliable place to start out.
  3. If you want a cigarette-looking e-cig choose one recommended on this forum, it will probably do the job at first.
  4. Dekang liquid is disgusting crap.
  5. A decent local store is great if you can find one. Mail order sucks for lots of reasons, and you may end up buying (and waiting for delivery) on a lot of junk.
  6. Don't suck too hard.
  7. Almost all the e-cigarette supplies on the market seem to be cheaply made / bad quality control.
  8. E-cigarettes can really help you quit but there's a lot more 'fiddling' involved because of #7 than there is in walking to the corner and buying a pack of smokes.

Hey there aheatedatom... thanks for posting your backstory... these are quite helpful for people considering switching to vaping. I do agree with your findings from experience. One need not jump onto the latest and greatest device but one that just works which is the eGo (I got mine from a local store and the help from the owners was immeasurable). Juices are quite subjective, but all I've read is Dekang = bad - don't bother and just go with one of the reputable online sellers. Welcome to ECF and I appreciate your first post!

Thanks for the kind welcome Cactus!

Agree about local stores- I'm still trying to find a shop in San Francisco that sells quality ejuice (in the city itself, not just the bay area.) I've tried a few of the local shops so once I'm past my five post restriction I'll start a thread elsewhere listing where I've bought local juice from and how it's been.

One thing I forgot to add that may help new people...before you buy a lot of hardware online, do browse through the 'negative reviews - suppliers' section of this forum. I purchased a whole lot of stuff from a particular supplier, one that's very popular- then they sent me the wrong item (a much cheaper one) and have stopped responding to my requests to fix the problem. Looking through that 'negative reviews' thread will give you an idea of what vendors are popular but have a few too many bad reviews per page.

Nice to meet you Grrr!

That's great news - I had no idea they had other stuff. Everything I've tried there has been in dekang bottles, except the one marked liqua- I'll go back and ask about other brands.

I've been searching for city-local juice suppliers, I just saw the Velvet Cloud website and emailed them to ask if they had local retail. She wrote me back with 15 minutes and told me that Head Rush on Haight carries some of their juice. I'm going to head there tomorrow and find out, I'd be delighted to buy juice locally.

I also haven't seen any SF 'vape meet' threads really - only ones with 0 replies, or one outside the city. If you ever want to do some juice trades let me know :)

Hi aheatedatom, welcome to ECF.

I too live in SF and I got my first kit at Vaporden, BTW they do stock some of Ms T's Bakery e-juice and they are talking to velvet cloud vapor, who are a local boutique e-juice vendor, about stocking some of their e-juice.

What I learned in a month......

Started with A starter kit from Halo 808d batteries and prefill carts. In the kit you get 1 manual and 1 auto battery. The charge on them last depending on how much you vape about 5-6 hours. They wernt to bad, didnt really like the tobacco flavors that I got in the sample tobacco pack. Found tobacco just isnt my thing. There was pretty good vapor and Th, went with 100% PG. They got me off smoking totally the first day. had a few really bad first days and the first week was a big adjustment after 40 years of smoking.

Found ECF at one point a few weeks after starting to vape

Started reading and discovered a whole new world that was not Halo.

I then decided to step up to the Visions 1300 mah Spinner, ordered 2 of them and the charger/usb. We went to a vape store here in the state and picked up some really good juice, and a few SLB clearos that are rebuildable, also a couple vision nanos. I like the bottom feeding. Ive ordered from quite a few vendors different juices, but I find I like sweet, so now I need to get some sweetner to add to some of the juices ive gotten.

I would say the Spinner is great Ive had no problems with it, if the voltage is a bit high Ill get a burnt juice flavor and I just turn it down a bit. I havent had any problems with leakage from the SLB and the nanos are cute and fun with no leakage.

We had ordered a few samplers from a very cheep vendor thinking we would be saving so much, well it was a waste of money, the juice was not vapeable. I have them steeping hoping they will get better.

Being this industry is still in its baby stages and it hasnt learned to walk yet I think alot of people have done some amazing things coming up with devices. I tryed a Vamo, wow that was amazing.

As my tastebuds started to wake up from a 40 year slumber I found Im not likeing some tastes anymore, but thats bound to happen. Its even that way with food. Im finding Im like the bold tastes and not the muted flavors. Still hate the tobacco flavors.

Ive found my balance of vaping and not craving. Ive gone threw alot of detoxing which hasnt been to great but I dont have the nasty smokers cough I had, im drinking alot more water than I have in years. Im finding its a long process to get the body over all the chemicals that were in the body. Its like learning to live all over again, but thats is a good thing. Having that I have been smoking since I was 15 years old, Ive never done things without lighting up, ive never tasted anything without half asleep tastebuds as an adult. Im sure there will be more things Ill have to over come but one day at a time one month at a time...

I too will be heading over to Head Rush on Haight, I had no idea they had them available in a store, thanks for the info :) If you go over to vaporden you'll have to ask them for the Ms T's Bakery it's not on the shelves. I've only been vaping for a month so only have a few different juice flavors, but I'm working on changing that. Maybe we can set up a local meet with other SF vapors.

Sounds good maybe I'll bump into ya there :toast:

I'd be in to the vape meet for sure. I want to see how many sf vapers are on this forum. My fiancee does a CSA box thing (locals subscribe for a fee, and a farm sends fresh fruit to a designated member every week. that member keeps their box free, and leaves their garage open for the other members to come pick up there's.)

If there's enough of us around I here I could see some variation of that idea being pretty cool.

I have done some learning myself. In my quest through carto's and clearo's, in a way to vape, and not burn things up, here is what I have come up with. I use 3 ecigs at 1 time. With the carto's, I lay them on their side in front of a tiny desk fan (to keep the liquid, even along the atomizer) to cool them after I vape them, and move on to the next, with the clearo, I just stand it up in front of the fan. Don't vape your juice until it begins to taste differently, that is the beginning of burning your juice and your carto, they will never recover from that. I am also using NET liquids, and try to stick to tobacco only, otherwise, I find myself chain vaping for the sweet flavor. You don't need anymore vape than you did smoke. The exception to my tobacco liquids is "My Hero Black and Blue" from myvapejuice.com. I seem to need that one. Keep your juices cool, and they will last much longer. Also, it seems to me, that in a simple PG/VG juice, that the higher VG levels burn faster. I try to keep my Pg levels at least at 60%. At first I thought I had a PG allergy, but I have come to believe that the allergies were caused by additives. Thats why I love myvapjuice.com, you can get them with no artificial additives.

Aheatedatom, I loved your post. You made me smile and frown as I read through your journey. Thank you for posting it!

Even after a year and finally finding my perfect vaping tools, I am still searching for my favorite liquids. I have found a few that I love and continue to order new flavors to try and find more. Plus it's exciting to try new flavors. Good luck with your search.

In your opinion. Good thread but not fair to Dekang at all. I use (& love) dekang vanilla & Peach regularly. Just saying.

Yes, definitely my opinion- no such think as objective view of flavors I don't think. Incidentally, the peach is one of there's I've tried that didn't do it for me. Very chemically, nasal passage burning flavor- not a 'burning atomizer' taste, something in their juices. Although as I try more juices I think it may be a PG problem as well for me- but other juices with PG don't have that effect, so who knows.

Thing I learned... Go with something that doesn't resemble a cigarette. I used a cig-a-like and still had stinkies on top of it (cut way down on them, sure, but still went to them).

I now have a Provari... and at first didn't think I would like the push button when taking a drag. BUT it doesn't hold like a cigarette and feel like a cigarette. I have now gotten use to something totally different and a cig now feels foreign to me.

Thanks for the post. This is my first post also. I identify with a lot of your struggles to get off analogs and it has only been 2 weeks since my last cig for me.

I have a ego-t with some stardust clearomizers and as the days have gone by, the initial taste feeling that I found great has faded. Now, I'm looking at some variable voltage devices but I'm not totally convinced that my vape experience will improve.

Great post, I think many of us have had to do a bit of trial an error to find something that works. I'm still working on it myself.

I started back in '09 with a 510 kit. Back then polly fill cartridges were the only thing around. Some people were dripping, some people were modifying their cartridges with tea bags as filler. At that time I wanted my ecig to look and feel like the real thing. The 510 was close, and I did ok on it for a few weeks, but eventually the lack of battery life and having to constantly fill the cartridges drove me back to analogs. I could never get those cartridges to wick juice properly, and had a constant problem with dry hits.

Recently I read an article in the paper about ecig's and it mentioned that a lot of improvements had been made. So I decided to look into them again.

I've only been back in the ecig's for 2 days, but so far I'm really happy with my 2 eGo twist batteries, some Kanger EVOD's, and some good quality juice. Previously I had only tried the Chinese 100% PG stuff that I got with my old 510 kit. The 2 batteries seem to last me all day, and so far the EVOD's are wicking well and tasting good. A full EVOD seems to last me almost exactly as long as a 650mah battery does.

Right now I'm trying to have one real cigarette first thing in the morning, and I'll use the ecig all day. I'll try to drop the morning cigarette in a week or two. It's actually been rather easy so far, I love that I can vape in my company car, and on the couch while watching tv.

I'm really liking how many great juices are out there now. Today I've been vaping some 24mg 50%/50% ice ice menthol with "extra flavor" from Vapedudes.com. Seems like really clean, quality stuff. I have another order on the way from Good Life Vapor. Quality juice really seems to be a big improvement over the stuff I tried back in '09.

Another thing I leaned back then: I amused I would want tobacco flavored juice, so I ordered mostly those with my first kit. They were all terrible. They may have improved, but I haven't tried any yet. It turns out I like menthol's, lemon's, redbull, etc. clean, crisp, refreshing, sour, & sweet, taste better to me than fake tobacco. I was surprised by this because I hated menthol cigarettes, and I don't normally have a sweet tooth.

I think the lesson I've leaned is that to be successful, I need to be ok with trying different setups, and I need to have a backup plan in place for those times when a clearomizer, atomizer, or battery goes bad, and they will go bad.

If I truly want to get of cigarette's and stay off, I need to make sure that I have a backup supply of juice, some backup batteries, etc.

I think my next purchase will be some more batteries, an extra charger, and a simple but effective dripping setup (atomizer's, drip shield, & drip tip) to use as a "backup" system. I think dripping is one of the more reliable method's and if I keep that around, I'll have something to switch to in an emergency.

With cigarette's, I didn't have to think much about my next pack, they're available everywhere. I kept a few spare lighter's around, and I made sure I enough smokes to last me the day. With the ecig, I think it's going to be key that I have a backup plan so that I don't run out of juice, loose a battery, or kill an atomizer and resort back to cigarette's out of desperation.
