I'm jealous Jerry! No remodeling ever done here. I can sit on the pot and wash my feet in the tub at the same time...quite the time saver if you're in a hurry ;)
Bov, when I say that the bathroom was the size of a broom closet, I meant that literally. There wasn't room for a tub, only a metal shower, that looked like it was WWII surplus. lol

Errands done...dog and cat food restocked. Gawd I hate going to Wally World 8-o

Stopped in Best Buy to check the price on stuffing a bit more ram into my computer. When I told the kid I need DDR 2 he laughed  I told him he was welcome to foot the bill for a new rig, otherwise I'd find what I'm looking for on line. How sad is it that my cheap ... cell phone has more memory than my desktop!!

So...question for 5c or anyone else who knows. I have 4 x DIMM, dual channel slots that take DDR 2 800/667/533 sticks. Right now each slot has a 1GB stick. Do both channels have to match, or can I just get 2 x 2GB sticks for one channel. In other words, do all 4 slots have to match, or just each channel? I can't afford to replace all 4, and prolly shouldn't even spend the cash to upgrade 2. MB is 6 or 7 year old Asus Striker Extreme https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Striker_Extreme/

Told you :)

I would be more than happy to answer that for your friend. Dual channel slots means that two slots that have the same exact RAM (e.g. 2 x 1GB DDR2 800) will run in dual channel mode. You also have to factor in 64 and 128 bit RAM... That has to be matching too.

So if you get a pair of matching 2GB RAM sticks, they can go in matching slots for dual channel mode. Then she can put whatever she wants in the other 2 slots. They can be 2 x 1GB sticks or 1GB and 512MB sticks.

I will also mention that if they do not match, then the computer will not run in dual channel, but it will still use all sticks of RAM. Dual channel only gives you a 5% increase in performance over single channel.

Most motherboards will have the slots in coordinating colors to indicate they are a pair. You can also find the motherboard manual online which will tell you as well.

I hope this helps her out!

Sincerely,

Matthew

I forgot to mention that if she only has a 32-bit version of Windows, it will only use and read 4GB of RAM. 64-bit utilizes much more than that. So it may be cheaper to get 2 more sticks of 1GB RAM. unless she is a video gamer, she won't really need any more than that.

Moon, that was very thoughtful of you to ask your computer friend for me, thank you and please thank Matthew for me :) Makes perfect sense, I used to know a lot more, but as they say...use it or lose it! I do have Win 7pro x 64.

Fran, I'm sorry to hear of yet another loss in your family.

Nice trading Dee...helping your cousin and getting enough to get some new toys of your own.

Tracy, I'm a little worried about 5c as well. He was supposed to get the stitch(s) out of his eye yesterday, I hope that went ok!
