My beach house felt the effects and I'm loading the bus for a trip down to check things out....

No damage here...By no damage I mean all the trees remain standing....there are multiple news reports of downed trees...The air is filled with the sounds of yard machines as my neighbors clean up...

...When I scraped him off of the main highway, I swore that I would never have another pet, again. That was over 30 years ago and so far, I have kept my promise.

...An unknown person went a good 4 feet off the road too run her down one day...I found her while I was riding my dirt bike...Clear tire tracks where they went off the road and over my dog....30 years gone now they best pray I never find out....

I have to admit I've never had to deal with this particular nastiness. Bonding with cats and one very special dog, then wrestling with the emotional Vesuvius you have to tamp out when they die? Many times.

Adding to that the duty of disposing of their broken, dismembered bodies? Ain't been there. Oh, I've buried many a cat. But the furball I've shoveled dirt onto in death has always been a last glimpse of the intact body I knew in life.

Good morning, Peeps. :)

Hiya, Princess.

Dee, I hope that your beach house is ok.

PI, I buried my cat in my yard.

Sooooo...a week or so back I decided to purchase some avocadoes. Why? Not sure. All I know about avocados is that they are green. And they are a necessary ingredient for guacamole. And they are full of good fat and vitamins. And various shades of green. I like green. Green and purple, my two favorite colors. And pink. Some pinks, not all...I digress.

Well, I haven't met too many guacamoles that I like but I am feeling adventurous in the kitchen these days so I am thinking I can make my own that I do.

Only problem is I don't know how to judge an avocado as ripe. They are not native in my life. I know when a peach is ripe by touch and look, I know when a watermelon is ripe by thumping and sometimes the color of its "tail", I know a cantaloupe by the hue of the orange that shines beneath the rind— but I do not have a clue when an avocado is ripe...it is green. Inside and out. Just green.

But that's what Google is for, right? As luck would have it, they came with instructions on their little bar-code sticker.

Ripe When Soft.

OK! I can do this!

Uhhh...no. No I can't.

After a few avocados you'll be a pro. If it is hard it is under ripe, if it is mushy it is over ripe and if you can press it firm/soft then flick off the button on the end if it reveals yellow/green then it is just right but if it reveals brown/black then it is gross inside. :)

I don't know.
I am avocado-shy now.

I have learned, without flicking buttons, that brown/black is not another shade of green. And yes, it is gross inside :D

Born and raised in SoCal, I think I can speak with authority on matters avocado, as ripeness can be ascertained in the same manner as posteriors.

Give yours a pinch, Pokey. Now pinch the avocado in your hand. Just about the same? You're good to go.

I should save this technique for after I've returned home from the store, I think?

Yeah, I think. :)
