I just got mine in the mail today and I got it near perfect on my first attempt. I did use a prerolled wick but it took about 10 minutes. It's working great. 1.8ohms. I'm surprised at how well this wicks. My only question is what are these "hot spots"? Is it a spot on the coil that is still glowing when theres juice in it?

it is when you fire up all the coils and one is much much hotter then others, this is noticed when you are firing up the coils with no juice in the tank. when the wick is wet, you cannot really see this, although you can taste it. if you notice the coils glowing with juice in the tank, then most likely there is a slight problem. with a proper wick and coil, you should be able to fire up the coils a very long time without them glowing

The only thing I've noticed is at glowing spot where the coil meets the center post regardless of juice being in it.
Edit: It seems like I took care of it by pushing the coil a little closer to the post and pushing the coil together a bit. I don't see any red spots at all.

you should be able to get the coil to not glow at the top leg. the glowing should stop at the wick if done correctly. usually this top leg glow happens when there is to much tension on the wire. sometimes as you tighten up the top nuts this brings over the wick towards the positive post, this is usually the culprit. try to reduce this tension. or sometimes the tension is to loose, it depends on the direction in which you wrap the wire around the nuts, if you make the wrap the opposite direction to which you have done your wick, then as you tighten the nuts the wick wants to come over, if you make the wrap to the positive post the same direction in which you wrapped your wick, then as you tighten the nuts the top wire will loosen, either way, the tension needs to be correct, if correct the leg will not glow

What device are you talking about? This thread is a bit confusing.

Ok now I'm really confused. I tried building a new one and it keeps shorting and a little flame appears on the top leg. I dont see where it could be shorting. everything is connected correctly.

You may begin to see why many say this thing is not extremely easy, at least at first.

I did another coil and it seems to work fine. My only big problem now is that I cant keep the wire on the post. It keeps sliding out no matter what I do.

if you have an atty that uses two or more top nuts then this is what I do. I make the nut wrap so that as I tighten down the top nut it pulls over the wick, now you will want to stop before this actually happens, just snug it down just before you feel the wire pulling the wick, at this point I tighten up the second nut to complete the connection, I do this with a pair of hemos.
