first time using ss cable and flat kanthal = fire on the ss cable. Is it wicking too fast?

I just prepared my aga t2 with .6 kanthal flat wire wrapped 4 times around 3mm ss cable that read 1.23 ohms on my ohm meter. When I was checking for hot spots the ss cable/mesh caught fire while pulsing after I primed the wick. Does this mean its wicking to much juice or what caused this. I didn't notice any hot spots the coil seemed to be glowing evenly. Any ideas? T.I.A.

I wouldn't worry about catching fire. Part of what stops this from happening normally is the top being on. It acts similarly to a candle snuffer that puts out a candle by not letting enough oxygen to get to the flame.
