I have been vap'n, no tobacco, for over a year now. I am a very happy dripper on both my SB and BB and BB PT. So happy that I have stopped paying attention to a lot of the new developments. In my last order Chad and Rob threw in a cartomizer. Took a while to even figure out that is what it is. (Thanks, Chad and Rob. You guys are the best)

I've done a search for cartomizer and got some info, but most of it has assumptions about previous knowledge.

I feel like a newbie. Can someone give me a real bottom line basics of the cartomizer.... Is is LR, how is it different from the old carts plus an atomizer.. etc etc etc.

Thanks everyone that responds.

The cartomizers are a simple to use, one piece device. They were designed to make the two piece (atomizer + cartridge) into one design. They are technically disposables, but you can get away with refilling them quite a few times. My current setup is Omega + Yeti/510 Cartomizer + Drip Tip = win. You can still drip, but since it's a cartridge as well it holds the liquid and allows you to drip less often :p

Atomizer + cartridge you are using now has the atomizer (coil) down at the bottom of the barrel. The mouth piece contains some sort of filler to hold the juice. When you stick the mouthpiece into the atomizer barrel that filler contacts the bridge over the atomizer coil. When you have contact the juice will flow/wick from the filler in the mouth piece, down the mesh covering the bridge and to the wick which the coil is wrapped around.

Cartomizer -- basically the filler is IN the atomizer. They usually have the coil positioned vertically in the center of the barrel. Around that they have some sort of permeable tube. then they pack the space surrounding the outside of that tube with filler. You fill it with juice and it will wick through the filler and soak that permeable tube surrounding the coil.

Downsides to cartomizers is that often after some number of refills they get sort of rank tasting... or the filler compacts and it gets hard to draw or maybe that's from juice clogging the bottom air path, whatever. My theory on why they get rank is that the juice surrounding that tube (also know as the "sock") and also in close proximity to it is probably getting boiled while the juice on the inner wall of the tube is getting vaporized. Just speculation.

The hype/hysterical concerns over cartomizers is that it appear that the tube/sock and or the filler can appear to burn or melt. Especially as it starts to run out of juice or it doesn't wick fast enough. Many people equate this to breathing arsenic or cyanide gas although science may not exactly bear that out. :)

Hang on a minute... I'll get you a pointer to the 165 page thread on "burning cartomizers"... haha

Didn't somebody post a vid about yanking that filler sock out completely? Is there an advantage to that?

My problem now with standard 510's at 5v and LR 510's is that I have to drip every ten puffs it seems.

How do cartos act on HV?

The idea of removing the filler (not the sock, you leave that in there) is that you can turn a cartomizer into a dripping atomizer. Maybe even a super one since I've rarely, if ever, burnt out the coil on a KR808D cartomizer. So you wait until they get stale after however many refills and then you remove the filler from around the "sock" and use it for dripping. I failed... I didn't try really really hard but I kept tearing out the sock with the filler, or I ended up yanking out the coil, or I just couldn't get all the filler out. That filler is sort of glued or stuck to stuff and the barrel in there.

I'm not sure I can get to 10 whole puffs when I'm dripping. I am doing it at 6v but you're doing good there.

Cartos are great at 6v. That's all I do (6v) and even though I use both atomizers (901s) and cartomizers I spend a good bit more time with cartomizers. I only drip with atomizers. Keep in mind that some juices just don't work well at 6v. Ok, they work fine but the flavor/taste will can be very different. Some flavors do much better than others.

Thanks everyone for the quick, to the point and clear information.

The only problem I have had with dripping is driving to and from work. I usually have three or four PVs fully dripped and prepared that get me to my destination without having to drip while driving. Maybe this cartomizer will get the daily travel taken care of with just one PV.

I'll give it a try soon and let you all know.
Thanks again. This is a wonderful forum. AltSmoke is an AWESOME vendor.
