Thread subscription doesn't work so well?

I subscribe to threads using the thread tools button at the top of the thread. No email. This way I can just click on my User CP and see threads that I'm interested in that have new posts. Great. I was up to maybe 100 or so. Then I noticed that it wasn't working for some of the older threads. I just happened to notice, using the New Posts button that one or more threads that I was subscribed to had new posts but they didn't show up in my User CP.

Is there some sort of time-out on thread notifications?
Is it something like once you get a notification you don't get any more until you log out and back in? -- haven't tried that yet.

[edit] I cut back to about 30 subscribed threads and that didn't make any difference.

You think there might be a timer? or it takes a very very long time to get around to processing the subscription notification? I'm pretty sure it's been the next day or at least a few hours where I've gone to my User CP and seen nothing listed and then done a New Posts and I'll see one of my subscribed threads in the list with new posts in it. A couple of times there had been a good number of posts to it. Like a page or so. Something is keeping track correctly because New Posts always seems to work and when I click on the "go to unread posts" it puts me at the one following where I left off the last time. I'll have to try to pay more attention to see if I can characterize it a bit better with more detail.

I know it can't be a timer, where it needs x amount of time before updating, because I have had threads where I literally hit submit on a post, looked at the page, hit User Cp, and when it loaded it showed the same thread on the User Cp page because someone made a post just a second or two after me.

Beyond that I really couldn't say since I haven't experienced the issue.

I've always found that once I've subscribed to a thread that I'll only get one notification via email (which I choose) upon the next post after subscribing. Yet, I'll not receive a notification for every following post, but my CP will track it and take me to the spot where I last view it.

I just figured that's the way it was supposed to work to save on system resources. I'd imagine the workload on the service would be huge if notifications had to go out to EVERYONE whol subsciibed to threads with the size of the membership.

I don't use/select the email option.

I think the email is only sent once until you visit the thread again and then it resets. So I think when there is a post to your subscribed (with email notification) it first looks to see if there are previous unread posts. If there are then it knows it must have sent you an email for a previous post. If there are no previous unread posts then it will send the email.
