Don't worry about sanding it- you should have enough room to work with, because of the o-ring that seals the top cap...if it doesn't tighten all the way, that's ok- just position the air hole where you want it, then cover it with your finger and try to take a drag; If you can't get any airflow, you won't need to do any modifications. ;)

Unfortunately when I screw it all the way down it falls short of the wick hole, loosening it a bit just makes it land farther away.
