Throat Hit Confusion Question

What exactly is throat hit? When I smoked analogs, I couldn't do it without a cough drop, vitamin C drop, certs,lifesavers or some other sort of hard candy. That also drove up the cost of smoking. I did that for 20 years. Never could just smoke an analog. I'd get a dry burning feeling in the back of my throat. Coudn't stand it.


Is that feeling that I had with analogs what you call throat hit? With vaping, I get the same thing. But only for the first 10 drags or so. Then the burn in the back of my throat goes away and my juices tastes good and doesn't burn any more. Is that weird? I've been vaping for 2 months now and every time I take a drag after not vaping for a while, I cough on the first drag and getting the butning throat, then after about 10 drags or so, everything is great. My juices are all around 15 nic, 70%VG/30% H2O or 100% VG.
Anyone know whats going on? Do you experience this?

Throat hit is basically what you described!!!
A higher nicotine content adds to the "hit".....and higher PG content of a juice is also a contributing factor....
Using 100% VG (as I do.....) helps keep throat hit down, but tends to mute SOME juice flavors....
With vaping most nicotine is absorbed through the mouth and nose, rather than the lungs; thus, a big lung inhale-which can accentuate throat hit- isn't really necessary..
Try holding the vapor in your mouth a few seconds....then exhaling through the nose....See if this minimizes your problem...

I think it's because it "feels" more like smoking a cigarette and fools our brains into thinking we're still smoking when it's only vapor.

+1 on that, although most smokers don't encounter the "throat hit" as a problem like you have, I would guess your experience is a bit more on the rare side.

Now see, I would not describe "throat hit" as a burning.
Thinking back to analogs, I would describe it more as, well, a hit. Ha!
Seriously though. I'll try to describe what it felt like to me.
A very light tap on the back of the throat.
Or that feeling you get just as you start to swallow.

That something almost but not quite touches/taps the back of the throat.
It was not unpleasant.

Lung hits, where I'm drawing the vapor directly into my lungs rather than into my mouth and then inhaling, do not give me the same sensation.

I've read:
PG for flavor
VG for vapor

Some people are sensitive to PG, some are sensitive to VG to varying degrees.
Heavy VG actually makes me cough. I prefer higher VG ratios, but can't vape them. My lungs apparently prefer lower VG, like 60PG/40VG. Sometimes 70PG/30VG.
Otherwise, I'm hacking my head off.

Oddly, I do get an almost burning sensation if I vape right after eating.
As in, last bite swallowed, take a vape.

If it bothers you, try a higher PG ratio juice. Just to see if it changes the sensation for you.

What type of device are you using? I find bottom coil tanks to be smoother. I can't vape more than 12 nic in my rba's because they pack a bigger punch irt throat hit. But I can vape 18+ nic in my tanks with little discomfort.

Juice choice also affects how hard something hits.

My absinthe juice could kick a mule over it hits so hard. My other juices I hardly notice.

I have a Vamo V3, 7 Kanger T3S's, Pro Tank 2 and an Aspire Mini Nova BDC that I just got.

I found out I love MBV Absinthe and Black licorice. I have a 50 ml of 70%VG 30% H2O,18mg of Absinthe with 5 flavor shots. Love it, no burn or anything and amazing taste. My Wife says anise is an anesthetic. Guessing hat helps with the throat burn, IDK?


I have some 50/50 juice and even some 60pg/40vg and wow, I have to force myself to vape that stuff so I don't waste it. It even gave me a sore throat.

The only throat hit I received was from that first analog in the morning. I guess 45 years of smoking does that. With vaping I couldn't care less about a TH. I vape to keep from smoking and to enjoy the flavors you can never get from a cigarette.

Throat hit is caused by nicotine. The higher the nic level, the greater the throat hit. PG tends to let more of it through. VG tends to mask it.

Higher VG levels allow you to use higher nic content liquids without coughing up a lung in the process.

Higher PG levels may increase flavor for some liquids, but not always. Some of the most flavorful liquids on the market today are max VG.

If you don't mind being a bit brave and diluting the nic a bit one option on the juices you are having issues with is to go to wal mart and pick up USP Glycerine which is what VG IS. Then just add a bit more VG to the juices you are having issues with.
