Feel free to tell me if this is all full of crap on not...
I had an RN4081 (NPro) for a few days and after doing constant battle with the battery cutoff which kept shutting down my atomizer, I went online and ordered up a 510 (Yeti) with a manual battery. I just decided it was very important for me to tell the thing when and how long I wanted the battery on rather than having it tell me. I figured I was a lot smarter than it was.
Anyway, the tips I was talking about...
Well, maybe the problems I am hearing about should be addressed first, such as burning plastic taste, leaking, melting cartridges, and other various maladies. I am not having any of these problems at all, and the 510 is working beautifully for me.
I think a lot of the problems I am hearing might well boil down to a couple of factors. There is (a) keeping the battery on too long, and (b) puffing far too frequently, and (c) restuffing cartridges either too tight or too loose.
I have found that if I puff too frequently, I am burning off all the juice from the top and then my next puff tastes a little on the plastic side. I am thinking that keeping the battery on too long will lead to a similar issue but the plastic taste may come at the end of that puff instead of the beginning of the next one.
Basically, it seems to be all about wicking, timing, and keeping a nice flow of juice to the top of the cartridge. Puff too frequently and the filler may not have had enough time to wick you up another good puff. Hold the battery too long and you start smoking some of your filler for similar reasons. Stuff your cartridge too tightly and it probably wicks too slowly. Stuff your cartridge too loosely and it probably does not wick well enough.
Well, I am using pre-filled cartridges still, because I still have not received my first juice order yet. These things just seem like common sense to me, but that doesn't mean I'm not full of crap either.
As for the tips, well, I generally like to wait around 20 seconds between puffs. I figure this gives the atomizer a little bit of time to cool down, take a break, and just chill out. I figure it also gives the filler time to do it's thing as far as wicking me up another good puff.
Another thing I do, which seems to work extremely well, is pay some attention to how I hold the thing when the cartridge is full, and when it is running low. When it is full I hold it with the cartridge side down so that the juice won't even think about leaking out and screwing everything up. And when it is running low I start holding it with the cartridge side up, to let gravity give my wicker a little help with it's wicking. Most of the time, in between these extremes, I just hold it however I want to hold it.
Whether or not I understand the wicking process correctly, and whether or not these tips are a load of hogwash or not, they are certainly working extremely well for me. But then again, I don't chain smoke this thing, and have no desire to do so. I just like to go outside, kick back, relax and enjoy the smoking experience one puff at a time.
Although this is working for my 510 very well, it may apply to other models too.
Or again, I could just be full of crap.
